Haldor married Maria Lien on Nov. 3, 1885 in Canton, SD. Mina Bergetta, Hilda, Olaf, Helmer Marvin, Alma Othelia, Laura, Matilda, Thea, Mabel and Emil were born to this union. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Mr. and Mrs. Haldor H. Stubsten were among the early residents of Grant Township. The former, like his brother, Frederick H., filed on a homestead west of the present Lennox town site. Mr. Stubsten filed on his claim nearly two miles west of here in 1878. He proved up on his homestead, and in 1893 he sold his properties and the family located on a farm approximately nine miles southeast of Lennox, in Lynn township, purchasing the tract there of about a quarter section, and laboring in the upbuilding of his agricultural enterprise. Here the family remained until May 3, 1920, when they retired from active duties and moved to Canton. On November 3, 1935 this pioneer couple was feted on their golden wedding anniversary. However their long marriage partnership was terminated with Mr. Stubsten's death on March 3, 1937. Mrs. Stubsten still makes her home at Canton. Mr. Stubsten was born near the capital city of Norway, Christiana (now Oslo), April 24, 1855. Here he spent his early years, and as a poor immigrant boy—with his brother in Iowa paying his fare— he came to the United States in 1872, going direct to Allamakee county, IA. For six years he remained with his brother, Frederick, in the Hawkeye state, and in 1878 they entered Dakota Territory and selected adjoining claims in this vicinity. On November 3, 1885, Haldor Stubsten was united in marriage to Miss Maria Lien. This union was blest with five children, namely: Mina, Hilda, Helmer, Olive and Alma. The family was reared in the Lutheran faith. Mr. Stubsten's parents—Hans and Betsy A. Stubsten—lived and died in their native land. Frederick homesteaded near Lennox in 1878; a sister Alita married Han O. Sather and resided in Lincoln County, and another sister was united in marriage to Ole Hugan, and remained in Norway.
