Mabe of Dobson Mill Road, Pilot Mountain passed away Friday, Dec. 29. 2000 at Surry Community Nursing center in Mount airy. Mrs. Mabe was born in Surry County on Jan. 17, 1904, to Robert Lee and Mary Hunter Simmons. She graduated from pilot Mountain High School. Mabe of Dobson Mill Road, Pilot Mountain passed away Friday, Dec. 29. 2000 at Surry Community Nursing center in Mount airy. Mrs. Mabe was born in Surry County on Jan. 17, 1904, to Robert Lee and Mary Hunter Simmons. She graduated from pilot Mountain High School. She attended Guilford College and taught public school for a number of years. She later worked at Amos and Smith from which she retired. She was a member of Pilot Mountain Friends Meeting.. In her retirement years she was an active volunteer for senior and civic activities devoting more than 20 years of service to work with senior citizens and the Pilot Mountain Civic Center. In 1997, she was honored by the town of Pilot Mountain for her 20 years of service. The Pilot Mountain Women's Club honored her as "Citizen of the Year" for 1997-1998. She was also honored by a proclamation by the Surry commissioners in 1999 for her dedication and volunteer service to seniors and the Pilot Mountain Civic Center. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, William Mabe, and attorney in Atlanta, Ga., and wife, Gale, and Dr. Alan R. Mabe, who is and administrator at Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla., and wife, Molly; three grandchildren, William F. Mabe Jr. of New Brunswick, N.J., John R. Mabe of Miami, Fla., and Allison Mabe Vann of Washington, D.C.; and a great-grandchild, Jackson Vann of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Mabe was preceded in death by two son, Joseph D. and James L. Mabe. Funeral services for Mrs. Mabe will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2001, at Pilot Mountain Friends Meeting by the Rev. Wayne Johnson. Interment will follow in the Pilot Mountain City Cemetery.
