Description | : | Hamilton (“Ham”) Smith, Jr. graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1931, where he majored in Electrical Engineering. He was accepted into the Army Air Corps and subsequently joined Pan Am in January, 1935 and was based in Brownsville, Texas. He was a Clipper pioneer, flying Boeing 314s aka the “flying boats” and DC-2s and Ford TriMotors. Later, he flew DC-3s, DC-4s, DC-6s, DC-7s and DC-8s. Other airplanes he flew were the Convair 240/440s, Sikorski S-38 seaplanes, Lockheed L-049 Constellations, B-314s and B-377 Stratocruisers.
