She was buried in Linwood cemetery on Sunday. She was born in Pennsylvania and was married to Jacob Crooks in 1816, removing to Indiana, thence to Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1845, and coming to Boone with the first families of pioneers. Mr. Crooks died, we think, in 1852, and in 1862 she married George Hull, who died about three years after their marriage. She was the mother of eleven children, some of whom are dead, the surviving ones being Hon. Geo. W. Crooks, and Mrs. James Hull of Boonsboro, M.J. Crooks, of Des Moines, and John, who lives in the far west, California we believe. Mrs. Crooks has always lived upon the frontier until within the last few years of her life. She was first married just after the late war with Great Britain in which Mr. Crooks had borne a musket in the ranks of American patriots, and she remembered well many of the stirring incidents of those times that are kept alive only in the unwritten history of the wet and the traditions of families whose heads took part in them. As is said above her life was spent on the borders of civilization. Their home in Indiana was in a wilderness, not the center of a dense mining settlement. In Jefferson County, this state, she had but few neighbors and coming to this new purchase to live she found a county without a house in it. What great changes she has lived to see and what hardships and privations she has passed through! Yet she was always contented, cheerful and happy. In early, yes in later times she was present at nearly all the births in the county, and many, now men and women had their first clothes put on by Aunt Hannah Crooks. She never did a thing that was wrong. Her life was devoted entirely to the happiness and comfort of others, and patiently has she filled her mission. Those old people are so different from the younger ones that we must pause to think awhile before we can give them their just mead of praise. These land marks and beacon lights are one by one disappearing from our midst and soon all will be gone, nor do we flatter them in saying that their lives have been far more useful and praiseworthy than the public of the period realize. There are none to take their place.
