Description	:	Hannah, Elizabeth Holden, oldest daughter of Geo. and Mary Metcalf was born Feb. 15, 1863 at Burley, Yorkshire, England and passed away at her home in Peterson, Iowa April 2, 1940. She was one of nine children and at an early age assumed the duties of home maker upon the death of her mother, with her father brothers and sisters, she moved to Burnley, Lancashire, England. Read More	Hannah, Elizabeth Holden, oldest daughter of Geo. and Mary Metcalf was born Feb. 15, 1863 at Burley, Yorkshire, England and passed away at her home in Peterson, Iowa April 2, 1940. She was one of nine children and at an early age assumed the duties of home maker upon the death of her mother, with her father brothers and sisters, she moved to Burnley, Lancashire, England. Here she was married to James E. Holden on October 15, 1887. To this union t wo daughters were born, the youngest dying in infancy. In September 1893 Mrs. Holden with her small daughter came to the United States to join her husband in the new home he had come, some months previously, to prepare. Rev. and Mrs. Holden worked in various pastorates in Wisconsin where they had first made their home. Rev Holden accepted a call to the Newell Congregational church in May 1911 and there they served the church and community until the spring of 1918 moving to Sioux Rapids. Because of ill health, Rev. Holden was forced to give up public speaking and after being elected County Clerk the family moved to Storm Lake where they resided until the death of Mr. Holden on September 5, 1927. Mrs. Holden sold her home in Storm Lake and came to make her home with lieu-daughter and family in Newell, moving to Petersen, Iowa with them August 1936. She was a member of the Eastern Star of Storm Lake, the Congregational church of Peterson and because of failing health had been forced to drop from active membership in the clubs and various civic organizations she found time to work with while her health permitted. She leaves to mourn her loss one daughter Lillian Norton, four grandchildren, Betty, James, Reynolds and John Norton. One sister, Mrs. Jane Wilson, two brothers, Mr. Leonard Metcalf and Mr. Geo. Metcalf who with their families all live in Lancashire, England. Also nieces, nephews, two aunts and many cousins all in England, besides hosts of friends in Wisconsin and Iowa, where ever she had made her home. A brief memorial service was held for Mrs. Holden at the Sioux Association meeting in Oto, April 3, and Dr. Montgomery paid the following tribute to her. She was a very ideal pastors wife and was held in high esteem and respect in the wide influence of her life . She is truly entitled to her full share of credit for the success of her husband’s pastorates. People could not help but love her and want to work with her. Source: The Newell Mirror, April 11, 1940
