Read More	The Columbian Dec. 1, 1936 Death Claims Miss Short of Pioneer Fame. Daughter of City's Founders dies here at age of 86 years. Ill for the past year, Hannah Emeline Short, 86, first of this historic city's native daughters, died at her home at the Clark Hotel here Monday evening. She was a daughter of Amos and Esther Short, Pioneer settlers on whose mile-square homestead the most important section of Vancouver now stands. She was the last surviving one of their offspring. First White Child Historically she was one of the city's most important figures for her memories ran back through virtually the entire period of the city's growth to the days fo the Hudson's Bay company stockade. She was so far as can be ascertained, the first white child born to American parents in the city of Vancouver. She was born Sept. 5, 1850, in a little log cabin on a part of what is now called the Sisters farm, near the western city limits, That cabin was the place where, not long before her birth, dauntless Esther Short defied British redcoats of the Hudson's Bay Company sent to evict the settlers, and so impressed the leader that he ordered his men to withdraw. Crippled in Infancy She was crippled for life by an accident in the summer of 1854 but she never permitted her handicap to sour her interest in life, her relatives declare. She went to school over the footpath from her home, in a little wagon drawn often by the schoolmaster himself, She was educated at Providence School and at the private school conducted by S. B. Curtis in the Old Masonic Hall at what is now Fifth and Franklin streets. After the death of her mother she went to her parents former home in Illinois with her brother Curtis for three years, then accompanied him to Hawaii, where he had to go because of failing health. They spent a total of 18 years there until his death. She returned to Washington and after a time took charge of a community telephone exchange at Selma, in the western part of the state. She had the switchboard installed in her room so that she could answer calls at all hours; and she ran the exchange for three years. Later for many years she operated a dressmaking establishment in Portland. Member of St. Luke's She is survived by six nephews, James, Short, Vancouver; Grant, Vancouver; Amos, Camas; Melvin and Crawford, Portland, and Gerald, Vancouver; and by eight neices; Mrs. Nora Niles, Vancouver, Mrs. Lottie Kelly, Portland, Mrs. Fred Olson, Portland; Mrs. T. H. Cowan, Camas, Mrs. B. E. Barnett, Camas, Mrs. A. H. Nyberg, Camas, Mrs. M. A. Leslie, Portland and Ruth Short, Vancouver. She was one of the oldest members of St. Luke's Episcopal church, having been a member since 1870. Services are to be held at Knapp's Chapel Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. C. S. Mook officiating. Mrs. Fred Olson of Portland will sing "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Good Night." Interment will be in the city cemetery, beside her mother. OBIT: The Columbian Dec. 2, 1936 Hanna Emmaline Short. There was a certain beauty to the life of Hanna Emmaline Short, first white child born in this city, which was reflected throughout her entire life, which is more than centered around the historic fact that she was the oldest native born resident. It had to do with her bravery in facing life as she found it. Injured first when three years old, she suffered a broken spine and a malformation of her back and legs when she was four in a second accident. Yet in her youth and in fact long past her youth, she would on occasion get out a horse, ride to Battle Ground Lake and stay until late watching the others dance the dances forbidden to her by accident. Hers was a complete life, despite her physical handicaps and her bravery in facing life as she found it was even more note worthy than her position as a historic personage.
