Excerpts from: Mrs. Hannah Garner’s Eighty-ninth Natal Day Honored
To live the age of eighty-nine years, possessed of good health, alert faculties and keen enjoyment of life, with a family of descendants numbering more than the ordinary group, and having the privilege of being in touch with them for most of her life; to look back on a long and useful life with more of sunshine than shadow in it, with children and grandchildren honoring their ancestry in their lives, and filling places of trust and prominence in their communities, this is the happy lot of Mrs. Hannah Garner, pioneer woman of San Bernardino.
Yesterday Mrs. Garner celebrated her eighty-ninth birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred W. Park, at 468 F Street, with whom she has made her home for a number of happy years, being cherished as the most important and most dearly beloved member of the family.
The hours were from 4 to 8, but the time was prolonged and passed unobserved by the unconventional company, some being yet present when ten o’clock arrived. The guest of honor was still enjoying herself at that hour, showing no fatigue in here smiling face, marred by no lines of passing Time and rosy cheeks rivaling those of the old fashioned girl blessed with a fadeless rouge of Nature’s mixing. Abundant silver hair frames her face, another gift of Nature’s favor.
An optimistic nature as well as a beautiful faith in the Ruler of all things, and observance of the Golden Rule throughout her long life, have brought Mrs. Garner to this beautiful ripe age, when it would appear that not more than seventy summers and winters at most had marked her journey.

SAN BERNARDINO, Jan. 23. Five generations were represented when relatives of Mrs. Hannah Garner, pioneer San Bernardino resident, assembled today to honor her 103rd birthday.
The reunion was held, as it has been for many years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred W. Park, at 3288 Genevieve street, where Mrs. Garner resides.
Mrs. Garner was born in McLeansboro, Ill., and it was there, as Hannah Huldah Herd, that she married Moses B. Garner. Together the young couple joined the westward migration of frontier settlers, locating first in Montana.
After several years, a milder climate became imperative to Mr. Garner’s health, and they moved to san Bernardino, then a straggling settlement more outpost than organized community. Ten children were born to the couple, a number of whom later became prominent in the town’s civic life.

Noted Pioneer of Cross-Country Trip to West Supports Celebration
The first act of State Senator Ralph E. Swing as chairman of the Half-Century club, organized in connection with San Bernardino’s Covered wagon Days celebration, was to present his grandmother, Mrs. Hannah H. Garner, 103 years old, with a membership in the club.
Believed to be the oldest resident of San Bernardino, Mrs. garner was also named by Senator swing as the only member of the Century club.
All residents of San Bernardino for 50 years or more will be eligible for membership in the Half Century club, Senator Swing said.
After presenting his grandmother with the memberships in two other organizations, Senator Swing explained details of the Covered wagon Days celebration.
Anxious to do her part in assisting the civic enterprise, Mrs. Garner, head of one of the valley’s most prominent families, promised her moral support.
When her well-known grandson asked if she would purchase a membership certificate in Covered Wagon Days, Inc., Mrs. Garner answered: “All right. Yes, give me two of them. Let’s have fun!”
Mrs. Garner resides with her daughter, Mrs. Florence K. Park, at 3288 Genevieve street, San Bernardino. She was born in Illinois on Jan. 21, 1835, and arrived at san Bernardino in a covered wagon late in 1864.

Widow of Moses B. Garner Came to California in 1864 by Covered Wagon Train
Mrs. Hannah Huldah Heard Garner, San Bernardino’s oldest pioneer, who attained the remarkable age of 105 years and survived all except two of her 10 children, died quietly in her sleep at 5 a.m. yesterday.
Her death was attributed to advanced age, as Mrs. Garner had not been seriously ill.
She resided with her daughter, Mrs. Florence K. Garner Park, at 3288 Genevieve avenue, where on Jan. 21 she celebrated her one hundred and fifth birthday with a number of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born at McLeansboro, Ill., on Jan. 21, 1835, and came to California in 1864 in a covered wagon. San Bernardino was her home for the greater part of the 76 years.
MARRIED IN 1850
Mrs. Garner was the widow of Moses B. Garner, to whom she was married on Aug. 25, 1850. Ten years after their marriage the shimmering gold of California attracted the couple and their five children to the west. They set out from their modest home in Cairo, Ill., during the early years of the Civil War. Mr. Garner was not well and could not fight, so the group boarded a boat and went up the Missouri river to St. Joseph, Mo., joining a train of 100 covered wagon.
The oxen-drawn covered wagon, the search for gold, experiences with the Indians and the hardships of those pioneer days were all recounted by Mrs. Garner numerous times in the reunions held by family and friends.
TWO CHILDREN REMAIN
Virginia City, Montana, was selected by the late Mr. Garner as the place to make his fortune in gold, instead of California, and it was not until 1864 the family came to San Bernardino, which remained its home.
Five more children were born to the Garners and they became known as the “California children.” Only two of the 10 are living and they are Mrs. Florence K. Garner Park of San Bernardino and Mrs. Jennie E. Garner Leamaster of Berkeley.
The other eight were Mary Frances Garner Swing, Lucy Celeste Garner Bryant, Margaret Garner Barton, William C. Garner, Robert Franklin Garner, Emma Garner, Joseph Allen Garner, all of San Bernardino, and John T. Garner of Riverside. Mr. Garner died in 1900, after establishing himself prominently in the valley.
Descendants of Mrs. Garner are prominent in civic and state life. One of her grandchildren is a former United States congressman, another is a state senator and others well known teachers, businessmen and women.
FUNERAL THURSDAY
Mrs. Garner was a member of the Southern Methodist church and the Rev. F. W. Rollins, pastor of St. Paul’s Methodist church, will conduct the funeral services, which have been set for Thursday at 2 p.m. in Mark B. Shaw memorial chapel. She will be buried in Pioneer cemetery beside her late husband and children in the family plot.
Grandchildren of Mrs. Garner are as follows: State Senator Ralph E. Swing, William W. Swing, Albert M. Swing, Miss Annie May Swing, William B. Garner, Robert F. Garner Jr., Gordon W. Park, and Dorothy E. Park, all of San Bernardino; Philip D. Swing of San Diego; Grace Bryant Pitts McBride of Goleta; Frances Bryant Friedman, John K. Garner, and Charles H. Garner of Los Angeles; Charles Speed Garner of Long Beach; Emma Barton Piercy, Ford Garner Carter, and Gladys Leamaster Douglas Howey, of San Francisco; Hazel Bryant Ohanneson of Sacramento; and Molly Barton Ruggles Hargreaves of Redlands. Seven other grandchildren are deceased.
