Read More	Thursday, 20 June, 1935 - The Enterprise FUNERAL SERVICES OF HANNAH HOKAMP Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Louise Wilhelmina Hokamp of Arlington were held Thursday afternoon at St. Paul’s Lutheran church with Rev. G. W. Wolter officiating. Mrs. Hokamp, as Hannah Stoner, was born June 28, 1844 at Laar, near Herford in Westphalia, Germany, and at the age of 22 years she came to the United States, coming to Quincy, Ill. where she married William Hokamp. Two years later they came to Arlington where they first lived in a little dugout on the farm where they spent the rest of their lives, Mr. Hokamp preceding her in death in 1886. Four sons also preceded their mother in death, two dying in infancy. Mrs. Hokamp died Tuesday after being bedfast for five weeks. Surviving are three sons: Herman, August and Fred, all of this vicinity; one daughter, Mrs. Jens Jensen of Laurel; one stepson, Henry Hokamp of Carroll; seventeen grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren. The choir, under the direction of O.C. Hartman, sang “Rock of Ages” and a group from the girls’ choir sang “Let Me Go to the Home” at the services. The pallbearers were W. L. Scheer, George Knecht, Louis Dickmeyer, Theodore Rinas, J. H. Hilgenkamp and H. Giesselman. Out of town relatives present for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Jens Jensen of Laurel, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hokamp of Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Hokamp and Mrs. John Schran of Belden. Contributor: MrsB (47910340) Biographical Information and Notes Hannah Hokamp immigrated to the United States in around 1866 from Germany (Prussia). By 1870, she was married to Wilhelm, who was also a German immigrant, and they were residing in an unspecified location in Nebraska. Residing with them was 14-year-old Heinrich Hokamp, who is identified as a son and was also born in Germany. As Hannah was declared to be age 28 at this time, Hannah may not have been his birth mother or may have been very young when Heinrich was born, however her exact birth details have nt bee confirmed and she may have been born earlier than indicated. This census also declares husband, Wilhelm, to be age 35, but the US census of 1880 and the Nebraska state census of 1885 indicate that his actual age may have been closer to 45, with a birth year of around 1825. The US census of 1880 places the family in Lincoln township in Washington county, Nebraska. Wilhelm, now apparently using the name of William, is present in this location with Hannah and their family in both 1880 and 1885. By 1900, Hannah (as Anna) was still residing in Lincoln, but she was now widowed. Considering the age of their youngest son, John, this would place William's death in the broad range of between 1886 and 1900. Residing with Hannah at this time were 4 of her children; Herman, August, Anna, and Fred. This census declares Hannah to have been with mother of six children with 4 still living in 1900 and all four children accounted for here. By 1910, and still in Lincoln, son, Herman, has assumed the designation as head of house with his two brothers, August and Fred, designated as "partners". Perhaps the three boys were engaged jointly in some enterprise with Hannah, still present in the family home, tending to her sons and their home. By 1920, the three brothers and their mother were still sharing the family home, but August had married. So, residents of the family home now included August's wife, martha, and 5 of their children; Lora (age 7), Meta (age 6), Esther (age 5), Albert (age 2) and an infant daughter, Norma. By 1930, brothers Herman, August, and Fred, along with their mother, were still sharing a residence. In addition to August's wife, Martha and the five children mentioned above, Sons Martin (age 8) and Gilbert (age 5) were added to the brood. By 1940, Hannah is no longer present in the family home, and cemetery records place her death at 1935. With her sons, her daughter-in-law, and the many grandchildren who surrounded Hannah through the years, I would like to believe that this was a very close family and one who worked together for all in the name of family, and I would like to imagine that Hannah's life was filled with lots of love and happiness. Father and husband, Wilhelm (William), born ca 1834-35 (per 1870 census), 1824-25 (per 1880 and 1885 census) in Germany (Prussia). Likely passed away between 1886 and 1900. Not listed in the online cemetery record. Children: 1) Heinrich, b ca 1855-56 in Prussia per 1870 census. As Henry in 1880 with b ca 1856-57 in Germany. Presumed deceased by in or by 1900. There is a Herman Henirich 1851- Sept 1873. If this is him, this would account for a deceased child. # 131087120 BUT birth years are not consistent with the 1880 and 1885 census. 2) Gotlieb / Gottlieb (misspelled Godlep in 1880), b ca 1870-71 in Nebraska per 1880 census. 1871-72 per 1885 census. MAY be one of the children who was deceased by 1900. I can find no further records on him. REQ 3) Herman H, 1873-74 in Nebraska per 1880 census. Present in 1885. B Nov 1873 per 1900 census. Present in the family home through at least 1930. 1873-1962, # 130429420 Remains with his brother, August, and family through 1940. He may have been born shortly after Herman Heinrich, 1851-1873, and named after him. REQ 4) August, 1875-76 in Nebraska per 1880 census. B 1874-75 per 1885 census. B Jan 1876 per 1900 census. Present in the family home through at least 1930. # 130429334 REQ 5) * John, 1878-79 in Nebraska per 1880 census. Present in 1885, 1878-79. Not present in the home after 1885. COULD be one of the two children who was deceased by 1900. * John H Hokamp, Dec. 12, 1878 - Jan. 28, 1900, # 130429451 6) Anna, b ca 1880-81 in Nebraska. Present in 1885. B Mar 1881 per 1900 census. REQ 7) * Fred W, 1885-86 in Nebraska. First appears in census record for 1900 with birth Jul 1886. As Hannah was declared to only have a total of 6 children in 1900, he may possibly be adopted or something along that line. He is enumerated as her son 1900-1930. # 130429483 Appears in Arlington in 1940 as the HOH with a housekeeper.
