OBITUARY: Hannah Maria Hamlin (obituary is copied as written in the article, but the name should be "Hawk" not Hawks) TERRITORY DEATHS Audubon County Pioneer Exira, Iowa, Aug. 27- (Special to News-Telegraph) Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Exira Christian Church for Mrs. Hannah Hamlin Hawks, pioneer resident of this county and first woman to be married in this city, the Rev. V. D. Hill, pastor of the Federated church, officiating. Interment was made in Bowen cemetery here. Deceased had been a member of the Christian Church for 65 years. Mrs. Hawks passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of her son, Ralph Hawks, of near Anita. She was 83 years, 6 months and 25 days old at the time of her death. Deceased was born in Champaign county, IL., March 28, 1843, the daughter of Nathaniel and Margaret Hamlin, the first settlers in Audubon county. They came here in 1851. On May 20, 1866, Miss Hamlin became the bride of Charles C. Hawks, who passed away seven years ago. Deceased is survived by nine children: Ralph of Anita, Elmer of Fort Laramie, Wyo., Arthur of Okonogin, Wash., Mrs. Grace Heath of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Winifred Lewis of Randolph, Neb., Mrs. Rose Pierson of Osmond, Neb., Mrs. Lyda Donahue of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Laurel Maus of Omaha, and two sisters, Mrs. Rose Thomas of Cache, Okla., and Mrs. Clara Allen of Plankinton, S. D. Two brothers, Allen Hamlin of Fayette, Utah, and Robert Hamlin of Lusk, Wyoming, together with 43 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren also survive. Two children died in infancy. ..................................... OBITUARY: From the Audubon County Journal, Thursday, August 26, 1926. Pioneer of Audubon County Passed Away Daughter of first settler in Audubon county died at the home of her son, Ralph Hawk, at Anita, on August 22. For the past few years Mrs. Hawk has been living among her children and on August 20th came to the home of her son. Shortly after her arrival she was stricken with a heart attack which resulted in her death. The deceased was a daughter of Nathaniel and Margaret Hamlin, who came to this county in 1851, being the first settler here. She was born in Champaign county, Illinois, on March 28, 1843, and was aged 83 years, 6 months and 25 days at the time of her death. She was united in marriage on May 20, 1866, to Charles C. Hawk, he having preceded her in death 7 years ago. To this union eleven children were born, two passing away a few years ago. Three sons and five daughters survive her. They are Ralph Hawk, Anita; Elmer Hawk, Fort Laramie, Wyo.; Arthur Hawk, Okonogin, Wash.; Grace Heath, Council Bluffs; Winifred Lewis, Randolph, Neb.; Lydia Donahue, Council Bluffs; Rose Pierson, Osmond, Neb.; Laurel Maus, Omaha, Neb. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Rose Thomas of Cache, Okla., and Mrs. Clara Allen of Plankton, S. D.; two brothers, Allen Hamlin of Fayette, Utah and Robert Hamlin of Lusk, Wyo.; forty three grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends. Mrs. Hawk had been a member of the Christian Church for 65 years, always faithful and steadfast in the faith of Jesus Christ. Funeral services were held at the Exira Christian Church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by Rev. V. B. Hill, pastor of the Federated church.
