HANNAH P. ALFRED Hannah P. Miller was born in Bedford County, Pa., June 19, 1844. She was the daughter of Martin and Esther Miller. She moved to Iowa at the age of two years and settled on a farm near Libertyville, Iowa. She was married to William W. Alfred July 4, 1860. To this union was born nine children. Her husband and four children have preceded her in death. She moved to Batavia, Iowa, in 1866, and has lived here until her death, August 11, 1929. She united with the Christian church in 1875 and has been a devout and faithful member ever since. She leaves to mourn her departure the following children: George C. Alfred of Ottumwa; Ed. L. of Batavia; Mrs. Emma Brown of Burlington; Jas. E. Alfred (sic. James E. Alfred) of Fairfield; Stewart C. Alfred of Eldon. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 14, at her home in Batavia, at 10 o'clock, followed by services in the Christian church of Batavia and 10:30, in charge of Rev. Orval Walker of Bondurant, Iowa, after which all that was mortal of this grand old Mother in Israel was tenderly conveyed to the Brethren cemetery southeast of Batavia, where, by the side of a devoted husband, she now rests in peace. The deceased was the mother of a large family, many of whom now have "silver threads among the gold," as a reminder that they, too, are nearing life's sunset. Our little city and its hospitable people ever held a warm corner in her heart. It was here the best days of her life were spent. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close, and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows that she met in the way, her faith in God never wavered. But she has left us and today the leaves fall upon another grave that hides from our sight all that is mortal of a true and noble woman. ----------- Fairfield Daily Ledger Monday August 12, 1929 Pg. 1 Col. 3 Fatal Collision Yesterday (Note: full text transcription not entered here due to graphic content) ----------- Batavia News June 19, 1919 Pg. 4, Col. 3 75th Birthday Anniversary Today, June 19th, marks the 75th milestone in the life of Mrs. Hannah Alfred of this city. "Aunt" Hannah one of the pioneer residents of Batavia and has resided here her entire wedded life, over fifty years, and she has a host of frineds (sic.) and acquaintances who extend congratulations today. A surprise six o'clock dinner will be given in her honor this evening by her children and their families.
