When he was fifteen years of age he united with the Lutheran Church, of which he remained a faithful and consistent member until his death. In 1841, he was united in marriage to Margaret Block. To this union were born two children, John Claussen of Newton and Mrs. Christine Reineck of Carroll, Iowa. His wife having died, he was, in 1847, united in marriage to Mary Block. To them were born three children, Ada, now Mrs. John Mackerman, and two sons who died in infancy. His second wife having died, he was married to Anna Pauls in 1861, and to them were born seven children: Adolph, Henry, and Herman Claussen, Mrs. Rosa Wheatcraft and Mrs. Agnes Pauls – August and Louise having died in childhood. Besides his widow, Anna Pauls Claussen, and his surviving children above named, he leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his death. He came from Germany to this country in 1881, and has ever since resided on his farm in Buena Vista Township this county. He was a kind husband and loving father, and was highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral services were held in Mt. Zion Chapel on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. D. R. Martin, pastor of the Newton M. E.
