Mr. Kruse was born in Holstein, Germany, March 15, 1834. He is the son of Paul and Margaret (Stortenberg) Kruse, who came in 1854 to America, and landing in New York City, proceeded at once to Scott County, Iowa, where they lived some years and then moved in Deer Creek Township, in this county, where they resided until their deaths, the mother departing this life Jan. 15, 1871, and the father in 1878. They were the parents of twelve children, six boys and six girls as follows: Abel, Paul, Annie, Henry, Cathrena, Hans, Claus, Jochim, Peter and Annie. The two Annies are deceased. Margaret died in infancy and they named another child Margaret. Our subject was united in marriage with Margaret Peterson, Sept. 17, 1859. She was born in Sleswick (sic), Germany, in 1838, and was one of the daughters of Hans and Catharina (Nave) Peterson. The mother died in June, 1857, in Germany; Mr. Petersen also died, March 3, 1883, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Kruse, in Center Township. They had five children, three boys and two girls as follows: Peter, Margaret, Jurjen, Catherine and Wilhelm. Mr. and Mrs. Kruse have had ten children, as follows: Anna M., who died age four years; Emma, who died at the age of 6; Lina, died age four weeks; Henry, died in infancy; Hermine C., born Sept. 7, 1871; Henry died at the age of six weeks; Hans. A., died aged eighteen months and Emer, born Feb. 5, 1880. Mr. Kruse has 400 acres of finely cultivated land on sections 3 and 4. On the former section stands a handsome dwelling-house 60 x 72, erected in 1883. It is two stories in height with a basement. His barns are large and convenient, one being 36x40 feet and another 26 x 30. He has also a water-tank of 300 barrels' capacity. He is a breeder of Holstein cattle and has a thorough-bred bull, which bears the name of "Thunderbolt" and wights 1300 pounds, though only two years old. March 13, 1884, Mr. Kruse became a member of the Lutheran Church. He is a Republican in politics and votes and works earnestly for the principles of the party. A fine lithographic view of the handsome residence, barns and out-buildings of Mr. Kruse's place is shown on another place. This bio (above) is partially correct. Hans Kruse and Margaretha (Petersen) had eleven documented children. Seven did not survive and appear on a common headstone with their parents in Center Grove Cemetery, Clinton County, Iowa: Anna, Emma, Lena, Heinrich, Claus, Hans and "ein maedchen" ("a girl"). Of the four who survived only Hermine and Emil (misspelled as "Emer") appear in this bio. Missing are surviving children Peter born 1868 and Paul born 1871. Also in error: A second child "Henry" in the bio listed as dying at age 6 weeks is documented as "Claus" on the family headstone. Lastly, "Deer Creek Township" should be "Deep Creek Township".
