Hansa Inger Boye was born April 11, 1907 in Wiggins, Miss. to Danish immigrants Hansa Christensen and Alma (Friis) Boye. When she was barely one month old, her father died. In the fall of 1907, she came with her mother and brothers to Hawarden, Iowa where her mother found employment and later married Ole Olesen. In March 1914, she came with the family to Seneca. They settled on a farm southwest of Seneca in Canton Township, Potter County, S.D. Here she grew up and received her eighth grade education. In 1927, she graduated from the Gettysburg High School. She taught school one year, then in February 1929, she married Glenn Geist of rural Lebanon. They settled on a farm in Canton Township. They survived the drought and the Great Depression and were blessed with five children. In 1943, her husband died after a lingering illness. She stayed on the farm with her children but returned to teaching in order to support them. In 1962, she moved into Seneca leaving son William to operate the farm. In 1966, she married Gerald Duncan, a childhood schoolmate. They continued to live in Seneca. She taught school for 25 years. After retiring from teaching, she worked in and helped operate the Seneca CafŽ for 15 years. She was a member of the Seneca Methodist church and taught Sunday school and bible school for 28 years. She was a member of the Seneca study club, the United Methodist Women, and Seneca Senior Citizens. When she was 90 years old, she learned she had cousins living in Denmark and made a trip to Denmark to meet them. She loved poetry and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and doing crafts. In October 2002, she moved with her husband to the Oahe Villa Apartments and in February 2005, moved into Oahe Manor. She is survived by husband Gerald; son Phillip (Carol) Geist of Howe, Texas; daughters: Phyllis Weber of Aberdeen; and Annabelle (Larry) Conrad of Lee, Fla.; daughter-in-laws: Dorothy Geist of Gettysburg and Gayle Geist Charron of Faulkton; sister Anna McLean of Rapid City; step children: Raymond (Ruth) Duncan of Lake side, Ariz.; Ruby (Jerry) Peters of Gettysburg, and Mary (Dale) Eriksen of Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and two step great-great-grandchildren, several sister-in-laws and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn; two sons: Glenn Jr. and William; one grandson; one great-grandson; eight brothers; and three infant sisters.
