Description	:	H. Haskell Edgerton and his first wife, Mary Achsah Pearson, were second cousins, as their common great-grandparents were Thomas Edgerton, III and Absilla Pike Edgerton. Mary died immediately after her fourth pregnancy of kidney and blood pressure failure, and the infant also died. Their oldest child also died at birth. After Mary's death, Haskell was married December 10, 1916 in Wayne County to Roella Cox (December 22, 1884-December 26, 1963), by whom he had four more children. She was a daughter of Jesse James Cox (July 1, 1852-July 8, 1935) and Talitha Cumi Massey (February 26, 1858-May 17, 1913), daughter of Levi Hollowell Massey and Avis Coleman. Thus, Roella's mother was a sister of Sarah Smiley Massey who married Mary's brother John Newlin Pearson and of Mary Catherine Massey who married her brother James Richmond Pearson. Below is the memorial prepared for Mr. Edgerton at the time of his death, taken from Theodore E. Perkins' compilation, "The Perkins and Allied Families of Wayne County, North Carolina" (1984): Memorial for Hardy Haschal Edgerton November 13, 1875--June 7, 1956 Richness of life is not measured in worldly honors or length of days but in the integrity and charm of a Christian Spirit. Haschal (Haskell) Edgerton will be remembered for his steadfast faith in God, his firm convictions and his faithfulness to his meeting which he served so well for so long. Haschal Edgerton was born in Johnston County, North Carolina, on November 13, 1875. He was the son of William Leonard and Sophronia Jinnette Edgerton and spent most of his life in Wayne County. He was a member of Nahunta Monthly Meeting of Friends of which he was a loyal member for many years and attended meeting regularly as long as his health permitted. On April 30, 1902 Haschal was married to Mary A. Pearson and two daughters of this first marriage survive [Ruth Newlin Edgerton 1909-1974 and Esther Edgerton Allen 1911-2004]. In a second marriage, he wed Roella Cox on December 10, 1916, and three sons [Jesse "Wilbert" Edgerton, Ph.D. 1918-2012, Howard Haschall Edgerton 1920-1999, and William "Kenneth" Edgerton 1922-1987] as well as his wife survive. [ He was preceded in death by his and Roella's youngest child, a daughter, Marian "Elizabeth" Edgerton 1924-1952]. Haschal Edgerton served several years as a member of the Permanent Board of the Yearly Meeting as well as on various other committees of the monthly, quarterly and yearly meetings. He also served on the local school board and was interested in the upbuilding of his meeting and the community at large. For several years he served as clerk of the Monthly Meeting and Contentnea Quarterly Meeting. He was also superintendent of the Nahunta Sunday School. On June 7, 1956, he died in the Wayne Memorial Hospital after a long period of failing health and several weeks in the hospital. He was buried in the family cemetery near the home.
