Description	:	Harlan Gwinn Thompson was born September 5, 1925 in Harper, Kansas. His parents, Harry and Verla (Newell) Thompson moved the family to California at the end of the "Dust Bowl" era in 1939. Harlan graduated, class of 1943 from Visalia Union High School, Visalia, CA. Shortly afterwards, the Thompson family returned to the farm in Harper. Harlan farmed and raised shorthorn cattle for most of his life. Harlan graduated, class of 1943 from Visalia Union High School, Visalia, CA. Shortly afterwards, the Thompson family returned to the farm in Harper. He also enjoyed collecting antique Caterpillar tractors. He was a member of the Church of Christ, the K&O Steam & Gas Engine Association, the Kansas Hudsonite Family Chapter, the Danville Coop Association, and the Caterpillar Antique Tractor Club. When asked to describe the sound of the Caterpillar tractor, Harlan stated, "That's the best sound this side of Heaven."After retiringfrom farming, Halan spent his time travelling to visit friends, family and going to tractor shows. He always had a story to tell or a clever old gadget for a show and tell. Harlan passed away May 5, 2011 at the Anthony Community Care Center, Anthony, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister,Melva Byars and brother-in-law, Crockett Byars. Those grateful for sharing in Harlan's life include his brother Philip Thompson of Harper, KS; and his niece and nephews, Tom, Tim, Paul, Patty, Mark, Jim, and Jay. Graveside services and inurnment will be held Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Harper Cemetery, Harper, KS with Mr. Eddie Barber officiating. Memorials may be given in memory of Harlan to the East Side Church of Christ, Harper, KS or the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
