Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial will follow in West Union Cemetery. Harlan was born August 31, 1926 on a farm near Ionia, Iowa - the son of Otto and Esther (Brockmeyer) Biermann. The family moved to West Union in 1938 when Harlan was in 5th grade. He graduated from West Union High in 1945 where he had excelled in athletics. In June of 1947 he and Shirley Chicken were united in marriage. They became the parents of three children. After retirement from owning and operating a plumbing and heating business, Harlan enjoyed outdoor activities - volunteer work at the West Union Recreation Center, fishing and especially golfing. He was proud to have had a hole-in-one on 5 occasions. He always said he would rather be lucky than good. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; 2 daughters, Susan (Jim) Valliere of Stuart, FL., Linda (Dave) Martin of Chetek, WI.; son, Dan (Jewel) Biermann of Dearborn, MO.; seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandson; a brother Daryl (Lorraine) Biermann; a sister, Donna (Ron) Crandall; two sisters-in-law, Anne Waskow and Ida Chicken; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Everett and Clarence; two sisters, Arlene Alcorn and Joan Bunch; mother-in-law, Mabel Weston; two sisters-in-law, Donna Biermann and Frances Biermann; two brothers-in-law, Daryl Waskow and Richard Chicken.
