Harland “Gus” Martin Zobel, son of Gustav and Anna (Predoehl) Zobel, was born December 7, 1927, at Bancroft, Nebraska. He attended school in Bancroft. Harland served in the United States Army from 1946 until 1947. While stationed in the Army, Harland was a construction inspector in Japan. Before he entered the Army he worked in aircraft assembly at Glenn L. Martin Nebraska Company/Omaha. Harland helped build and modify the B-29’s “Enola Gay” and “Bock’s Car” that carried the atomic bombs. On November 13, 1955, Harland was united in marriage to Darlene Gilster, at Bancroft. They were blessed with six daughters, Diana, Linda, Lorretta, Anne, Connie, and Jackie. Harland lived in several places throughout Nebraska during his lifetime including, Bancroft, Pender, Bellevue, and Norfolk. He was employed as a bricklayer and construction superintendent. He worked for Christiansen Construction in Pender, Nebraska, J.H. Hespe Construction in Pender and Norfolk, and Dugdale’s. Harland helped build St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mount Olive Lutheran Church, and Norfolk Junior High School, among many others. Harland was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He was a volunteer fireman and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity. He loved his family very much. Harland used his fine woodworking skills to make many things, from furniture to toys. He died peacefully with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer. Harland is survived by his wife, Darlene; daughters, Diana Berger, Linda Steffee; Lorretta (Larry) Svenson, Anne (Brad) Fisher, Connie (Randy) Barritt, and Jackie (Mike) Place; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; one brother; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
