Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Interment will follow at the Underwood Cemetery. Harley J. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Interment will follow at the Underwood Cemetery. Harley J. Hassler was born May 28, 1927, in Underwood, to John and Louise (Roeder) Hassler. He grew up on the family farm southwest of Underwood and attended the Longfellow rural school for seven years. Harley graduated from Underwood High School, in 1945. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945 and served in the Philippines until his honorable discharge in July 1946. Harley worked as a mechanic during the construction phase of the Garrison Dam. In 1957, he took over the operation of the family farm near Underwood. Harley married Shirley Sheldon on June 20, 1964, in Fargo. They made their home on the farm and raised one daughter, Barbara. He was a dedicated member of several community organizations and boards. Harley enjoyed spending time with his family and wood-turning. He took great pride in his self-constructed four-wheel drive tractor which he used for many years on the farm. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Hassler, Underwood; one daughter, Barbara Hassler, North Dakota; three brothers-in-law, Dr. Don (Mary) Sheldon, Robert (Donna) Sheldon, and Jerry (Patricia) Sheldon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Harley was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Clarice; and two infant brothers.
