Harley Otis Hughes dies while on visit Harley Otis Hughes was born in Wayne County, Iowa March 24, 1873. He was the oldest son of William and Sarah Hughes. He spent all of his early life in Wayne County on a farm two and one half miles west of Corydon. He was a graduate of the Corydon High school. He joined the Baptist Church at Corydon. He married to Estella May Hardy, March 9, 1895. They took up their residence on the Hughes homestead. It was four and one half years later their only child was born. The following year they moved to Taylor County, Iowa where they lived for four years. In December, 1907 they came to Upland. March 1, 1908 they moved to the farm they had purchased three miles northwest of Upland. This was destined to be their home for the next twenty one years. In March 1929 they moved to Upland where they continued to make their home until his wife passed away October 3, 1940. He moved to Minden December 1943 where he made his home till his death. He went back to Iowa to his old home for a visit July 13. On July 15 he had a cerebral hemorrhage at the home of his niece, Miss Metta Hughes of Corydon, Iowa. He was taken to a hospital at Centerville, Iowa where he passed away at the age of 75 years, 4 months, and 23 days. He leaves to mourn his passing one son, Walter G. Hughes, and wife, and only grandchild, Marjorie Hughes also two brothers Sam Hughes of Altadena, California and Fred Hughes of Goldhill, North Carolina and two sisters Mrs. Alice Gibbs of Corydon, Iowa and Mrs. Lula Blizzard of Rocky Ford, Colorado, one brother and one sister preceded him in death. The deceased was a very quiet man with no bad habits. Mr. Hughes will be missed by many relatives, friends and neighbors who loved and respected him. Funeral services were held last Thursday afternoon at 2:00 O'clock at the Layton Funeral Home in Minden and burial was in the Upland Cemetery beside his wife. Miss Meta Hughes of Corydon, Iowa was the only relative from a distance present. Obituary from unknown paper and typed in by Carol Strayer. |
