He was self employed as a sheet rock installer before joining the city of Ames as a lineman in 1967, retiring in 1999. He played guitar in his own band well into his retirement years, performing in public in Ames and Boone. He was a member of the Isaak Walton League. Linda died of leukemia in 1979. He married his third wife, Mary, on May 28, 1988 in an outdoor ceremony. They enjoyed 18 years of marriage.
