He was born on November 26, 1927, in Wood Center, Iowa, the son of Howard and Cora (Brockmeyer) Wessel. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He joined the U.S. Army on October 11, 1950. He was awarded the Army Occupational Medal (Japan), United Nations Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and one Overseas Bar. He was born on November 26, 1927, in Wood Center, Iowa, the son of Howard and Cora (Brockmeyer) Wessel. He attended country school through the eighth grade. He joined the U.S. Army on October 11, 1950. He attained the rank of Corporal prior to his honorable discharge on October 4, 1952. Harlyn was united in marriage to Henrietta Lubben on September 19, 1953, in Decorah, Iowa. Three children were born to this union. He was a lifelong mechanic. His career started with Art Welterlen & Sons in Edgewood, and the last twelve years were at Del Clay in Edgewood, retiring in 1991. Harlyn loved working on tractors and worked on them until his health prevented him from doing so. He was a longtime and dedicated member of American Legion Post # 512, and on March 15, 2003, was certified as a member in good standing for over fifty years. Harlyn was a fireman with the Edgewood Fire Department for over fifty years. He rarely missed a fire call and was always there to help with maintenance or putting on chains if weather demanded. He was a member of the Edgewood Bible Church where he was a trustee. He will be remembered as one who loved to visit with friends and family. Survivors include his loving wife, Henrietta Wessel, Edgewood; one daughter, Julie Bushaw, Minneapolis, MN; two sons, Steven (Julie) Wessel, Colesburg, Jerry (Marcia) Wessel, Edgewood; five grandchildren, Jennifer Bushaw, Jaci Simmons, Shanna (Kurt) Sperfslage, Shane Wessel and Caleb Wessel; four great-grandchildren, Chase Bushaw, Zachery Simmons, Lexi Bushaw and Taylor Sperfslage and a brother Eugene Wessel, Savanna, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Donna Kruger. Harlyn was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and will be missed by all who knew him.
