He was baptized Nov. 23, 1858 (sic) at Krawe Parish of Leerhafe, Germany. In 1873 at the age of 17 he came to America arriving at Champaign, IL where he lived with his uncles Edward Hofeling and Harm Franzen. He became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. on Oct. 31, 1878 at Urbana, Champaign, IL. He worked as a cooper making kegs and barrels. He moved from IL to Humboldt, NE. where he met Maria (Mary) Christine Kuper. They were married Feb. 25, 1881, at St. James (Long Branch) Lutheran Church, rural Humboldt, Nemaha, NE. They moved to Downs, KS shortly thereafter. He purchased a farm in Smith County, KS. on Feb. 29, 1884. On Oct. 17, 1892 he donated a tract of land on his farm to the Board of Trustees of the Evangelical Lutheran Zion Germeside of Lincoln Township for church use. On Feb. 15, 1894 he sold out and moved to Custer County, OK. living near his brother Dick Cordes. Their daughter Anna (Cordes) Traubert remembered that they lived on a farm near Thomas, OK. which was near an Indian Reservation. One day some Indians came and wanted a pig. They took the biggest, best one they had, dressed it in the barnyard and left the discards laying there on the ground. When her father asked them to pay for the hog they refused. The Indians placed the meat over a horses back and rode away. Mrs. Cordes and the three girls were in the house peeking around the door to see what was happening. This was a frightening experience for all. The girls went to school in dugout which was also used for church services. The family left Oklahoma because of the Indians and other hardships. The length of their stay in Oklahoma is unknown but they were living near Guide Rock, NE. in 1898. They lived in the Guide Rock area until 1901 and then moved to Nuckolls County, NE. and bought a farm three miles north of Nelson, NE. on Oct. 16, 1901. They lived there until their deaths in 1908. Harm died at Nelson, Nuckolls County, NE and buried May 13, 1908 at the Nelson Cemetery. His parents were: Harm Coordes and Grace Dirks Franzen Coordes. They had 3 children: Margaretha (Maggie)Catherine b. Nov. 17, 1882, bapt. at St. James Luth. d. Dec. 4, 1960, Lincoln, NE. m. Feb.3, 1904 to Emil George Jonscher. Anna Mary b. Sept. 4, 1884 Downs, Smith, KS.d. June 3, 1972, Denver, CO. m. Feb. 22, 1900 Webster Co. Ne. to Edward L.M.H. Traubert. Lena b. Apr. 25, 1887, Downs, Smith, KS. d. Jan. 27, 1919, Nelson, NE, Dec. 26. 1907 Nuckolls Co. to Arthur Dunken. =================================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, Prominent Farmer Takes His Own Life. Harm Cordes goes by the strychnine route. His dead body was discovered about 10 o'clock Sunday night by His Son-in-law, who immediately Notifies Coroner. This community was shocked Monday morning to learn that Harm Cordes, one of the prosperous German farmers living north of town had taken his own life the night before by taking strychnine. The facts as we were able to learn them are about as follows; He was staying at the home of son-in-law, Dick Dunken, and he had gone to bed but did not seem to be resting well and they just supposed he had a slight indisposition. and did not pay much attention to it. but about 10 o'clock they again went to his room and found him dead. Coroner Althouse was at once notified and went to the scene and made arrangements to hold an inquest the next day. the jury bringing in a verdict that he had died by his own hand as a result of taking strychnine. it is supposed that he had become despondent over the loss of his wife who died a few months ago which had partially deranged his reason and he decided to end it all which he accomplished as above stated. Harm Cordes was born in Germany, Nov. 3, 1858 (sic), being at the time of his death, 49 year, 6 months and 7 days of age. He leaves to mourn 2 sons and one daughter and the sympathy goes to them in this sad bereavement. The funeral was held from the Methodist church in this place on Wednesday at 11 o'clock, The sermon being delivered by Rev. J.F. Green, and the interment was made in the Nelson Cemetery.
