Read More	SOURCE: THE MONTICELLO EXPRESS….NOVEMBER 2, 1939…..PAGE 1 HARM HELGENS RITES LARGELY ATTENDED Harm Helgens, a prominent and respected farmer of Wayne Township, passed away at his home Friday night following a short illness. Mr. Helgens was a very active man and was able to drive his own car and get about until a few weeks before his death. He suffered an injury to one of his legs that caused complications which contributed to his passing. Funeral services were held at the family home Monday afternoon at one o’clock followed by further services at Wayne Zion Lutheran church. Mr. Helgens’ pastor, Rev. F.H. Kehren, had charge of both services and burial was made at the cemetery adjoining the church. His former pastor, Rev. J. Willms of Greene, delivered the German sermon. BORN IN GERMANY Harm Helgens was born at Strackhold, Ostfriesland, Germany, February 14, 1852. He was a son of William and Margareta Grumm Helgens. In his early infancy he was baptized in the Lutheran church and came to American in 1857 when he was nearly six years of age. The family lived for some time near Sterling, Ill., and then continued westward where they settled in Wayne Township in 1864 where Mr. Helgens spent the remainder of his natural life. At the age of 16 years he was confirmed in the St. John’s Lutheran church in 1869 by Pastor J.J. Oetjem. He was ever a faithful member of the church and took great interest in its activities in Wayne Township. Mr. Helgens followed the vocation of farming throughout his life and was recognized as being highly successful. He was twice married. His first marriage to Anna Tobiason of Marx, Ostriesland, Germany, occurred February 15, 1876 and was solemnized by Rev. C. Mardorf of Zion Lutheran church. This marriage continued for 24 years when Mrs. Helgens died July 24, 1897. Six children were born to this union, Fred Helgens of Wayne township; Mrs. Catherine Collman, New Richland, Minn., Msr. Henry Zimmerman, George Helgens, Mrs. Alfred Folkerts, of Wayne township, and Reinhardt of Monticello. SECOND MARRIAGE The second marriage of Mr. Helgens occurred July 2, 1900 to Gretche Zimmerman. The marriage was performed by Rev. C. Mardorf and continued for a period of three years. Three sons were born to this union: Herman, Edward and Louis, all of Monticello. Mr. Helgens is also survived by three step-children, Mrs. Carl Siebels of Anamosa; W.J. Zimmerman of Amber and Mrs. Henry Tobiason of Monticello; 40 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Anke Collman of LeMars, Mrs. Anna Smith and Mrs. Louise Harms of Omaha, and Mrs. Wilhelm Rieken of Anamosa; a half-brother, Willie Helgens, of Monticello, and a half-sister, Mrs. Matie Serbousek, of Center Junction.
