Description	:	Harmon Ellsworth Shoda, 89, of Loon Lake, died Monday afternoon, June 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness. He was born August 14, 1926 in Laud, Indiana a son of Carl E. and Relta M. (Putman) Shoda. His formative years were spent in Laud. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School. Read More	Harmon Ellsworth Shoda, 89, of Loon Lake, died Monday afternoon, June 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family following an extended illness. He was born August 14, 1926 in Laud, Indiana a son of Carl E. and Relta M. (Putman) Shoda. His formative years were spent in Laud. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School. On December 14, 1944 he enlisted in the United States Army, serving with the Eleventh Airborne Paratroopers during World War II. He served in the Phillipine Islands, Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan. He was one of a special few who parachuted into Tokyo Bay as occupational forces and "participated in the landing of Eighth United States Army units on Japan and was present 30 August 1945 for the first day of the occupation." He also was honor guard on the battleship Missouri when Admiral Nimitz and the Japanese General signed that Japan surrendered. Harmon was honorably discharged November 17, 1946. Harm worked for Pennsylvania Railroad for a short time, General Electric for a year and International Harvester in the paint department for a year. He then became a plumber's apprentice and helped plumb the old Whitley County Hospital for C.E. "Hoot" Gibson Plumbing. In 1950 he began working for M.C. Wheeler & Sons until retiring in 1998 with 48 years of service. He then did maintenance work for River Bluff Apartments until age 82. On August 4, 1956 he was united in marriage to Carol L. Peterson. They have always made their home in the Columbia City area, moving to their home at Loon Lake they built in 1962. He was a member of Due Guard Lodge #278 Free & Accepted Masons and Wolf Lake V.F.W. Post #4717. He received his Emergency Medical Training from Dr. Jerome Wait. Surviving relatives include his wife, Carol; a daughter and a son, Lisa (Robert) Jahn and Brady (Laura) Shoda, all of Columbia City; 12 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a sister, Phyllis A. Pippin of Columbia City. He was preceded in death by a son, Brett L. Shoda, and a brother, Gene Shoda.
