Yes. To bloom no more; One by one our loved ones leave us For God's eternal shore. Death -- cold death -- will chill them. Though we weep that we must part With the ones we loved so dearly -- How it wounds our tender heart. Herman H. Luken, one of the county's substantial and well known citizen's, passed out of this life at his home in San Pierre last Friday morning after a brief illness at the age of 70 years, 7 months and 28 days. Deceased was born June 2, 1843 at Alhorn, District Grossenknaten, Grossherzogtrihm, Oldenburg, Germany. He served as a solder in the Fatherland in 1866 in the German war against Austria and Hanover. In May, 1867 he was united in marriage to Anna Catherine Cording of Sage, District Grossenknaten. In 1869 he and his wife, accompanied by his parents, emigrated to America coming direct to San Pierre, where he purchased a large tract of land in the then "primeval forests" of Railroad township. Upon this land they settled and proceeded to hew out a home for themselves which, in time, by their own industry and economy, they made to "blossom as the rose." It was in this home that seven children were born to them -- six daughters and one son -- all of whom are still living. Their mother preceded the father in death by 17 years. Henry, who is now serving his second term as County Commissioner, still occupies the old home-stead southwest of town. Of the daughters -- Sena, now the wife of H. A. Hine; Julia, the wife of Postmaster Weinkauff, and Misses Anna and Lizzie Luken, all reside in San Pierre; Sophia, now wife of Edward Long and Lottie, wife of Fred Batzka, live on farms in Railroad township near San Pierre. 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, 4 sisters and 3 brothers survive the deceased. The sisters are: Mrs. Alberding of near San Pierre, Mrs. Catherine Kuester of Kankakee, Ill., Mrs. Julius Hine of Jasper county and Mrs. John Kluth of Lafayette. The brothers are: William of Chicago; Henry, of Medaryville and August, of Hamlet, all of whom were present at the funeral, which was held from the St. Lucas German Lutheran church San Pierre, with Rev. Breunnian officiating, after which the remains were laid at rest beside his departed wife in the San Pierre cemetery. Thus closes the earthly career of Herman Heinrich Luken. He was a consistent Christian, a kind and indulgent father and a generous neighbor, who was loved and respected by all who knew him. The children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in this their sad bereavement. "Peace be to his ashes. Father is gone but not forgotten; never shall his memory fade; sweetest thoughts shall ever linger, round the grave where he is laid." Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: John, Geo. and Fred Kluth of Lafayette; Henry Kluth, Otto Luken and wife and Adolph Luken of Chicago; Wm. Luken, Harley Miller and wife, Glen Clavk and wife of Medaryville, Wm. Kuester and wife and Chas. Kuester, of North Judson; Arthur Marshall and wife of Schneider; Mrs. Bertha Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Gust Reetz, and Julius Blassin, of Michigan City and Mrs. Nellie Anderson, of Crown Point, Herman Alberding and wife of Winamac, Henry Alberding, of No. Judson and Leo Alberding, of Logansport.
