Read More	Fremont Tribune - June 27, 1922 (Tuesday) One of the most pitiful drownings ever occurring in Fremont happened yesterday (Monday) afternoon at 4 o'clock, when Harold Albert Howard, 12 and John Eugene Howard 9, sons of Mr & Mrs Eugene Howard, 646 Washington Street, were drowned in Murphy's sand pit west of the city. The two boys with a companion Jack Lewis were playing around the edge of the pond yesterday afternoon. They were walking around in the water when John, the youngest of the Howard boys, slipped and fell. He kept slipping into deeper water and his brother seeing that he was in danger went to his aid. They were carried out over their heads in the water and disappeared from sight. Young Lewis ran for help. The first two houses which he found were vacant, and he found a phone in the third house where he called up the sheriff. Sheriff Condit, Chief Breuner and Officer Ed Clark responded to the call, loading the pulmotor into the car at the police station. They rushed to the lakes and started immediately to drag the lakes for the bodies. Other men who had gathered had been diving in effort to locate the two boys, but to no avail. The first body was found about 6 o'clock, an hour and a half after drowning. Twenty minutes later the other one was located. Fred Dingler and A.W. Murphy found the bodies. On recovering the bodies the pulmotor was instantly put into use but the boys had been under too long and all signs of life had gone. They were loaded into Sheriff Condit's car to be taken to town. The father of the boys had arrived on the scene and when leaving told the officials to drive to his house with the boys so that their mother might see them. On arriving at the house the stricken mother wished to take the bodies into the house and did not want them to be taken to a undertaken parlor. Finall;y the parents were persuaded to have them taken to the Bader undertaking parlor. The boys attended the Catholic school here and were popular with everyone who knew them. They were bright, intelligent lads and their devotion for each other was shown when the one lost his life in an attempt to save the other. Nearly of an age they played together and were inseparable companions. The father of the boys is employed at the Northwestern freight depot as a trucker. Besides the parent th;e boys are survived by two sisters living at home. The family is grief stricken at the unfortunate fate which has deprived them of their two sons. Fremont Tribune - June 29, 1922 (Thursday) Together in death as they were in life, Harold Albert and John Eugene Howard, the two boys who were drowned in Mu;rphy's sand pit Monday afternoon, were laid to rest in the same grave this morning. Their caskets were borne by the same pallbearers, young friends of the boys. The funeral for the unfortunate lads, one of whom met his death in a futile effort to save his brother, was one of the largest attended in the city for some time. Many comrades of the youngsters rode to the cemetery on bicycles and a crowd completely surrounded the burial ground. The services were held in the Catholic church this morning at 9 o'clock. Burial was made in Calvary cemetery.
