Description	:	s/o Friedrich "Fred" Kern / Matilda Weishaar He grew up on the family farm near Lauer. After graduating from Odessa High School in 1936, he worked on the construction of Grand Coulee Dam until he joined the US Navy, where he was a machinist first class as signed to the battleship USS Nevada that was involved in the attack at Pearl Harbor. He was later stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago, where he completed seven years of service. Served as mayor of Odessa from 1988 to 1991, he was also a building inspector for the town of Odessa.... In Oct 1993 he ended a career as a reporter and writer for the Odessa Record which had spanned 61 years. His memberships included Lions Club International, Odessa Grange, Pearl Harbor Survivors Assn. and life membership in the Veterans of Foreign wars and the American Legion. Survived by his wife, 2 daughters, 4 stepchildren, 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 2 brothers.
