Description	:	Harold August "Daubie" DAUBENSPECK Born in St. Maries', Idaho August 3, 1913 the second of six children of Mary and J. Byron Daubenspeck and passed away quietly at home on May 21, 2008. His family moved to Spokane where he attended St. Aloysius grade school until the 5th grade, when they made their permanent home in Seattle. He attended St. Joseph grade school, Seattle Prep, and graduated from Broadway High School. Read More	Harold August "Daubie" DAUBENSPECK Born in St. Maries', Idaho August 3, 1913 the second of six children of Mary and J. Byron Daubenspeck and passed away quietly at home on May 21, 2008. His family moved to Spokane where he attended St. Aloysius grade school until the 5th grade, when they made their permanent home in Seattle. He attended St. Joseph grade school, Seattle Prep, and graduated from Broadway High School. He was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree from Seattle University with a major in Chemistry and Bacteriology with plans to become a doctor. He was truly a self-made man. When he was 15, he and a friend bought their first boat with funds from their paper routes and at 18, along with friends, John and Frank Harthorne, bought a 34' partially finished boat in Tacoma. Together, the boys finished the boat and began fishing in Ketchikan to finance their college educations. In 1941 he completed his first year at Marquette Medical School, but plans were cut short by WWII. He was drafted and commissioned in the US Army Air Force serving in the 13th fighter Command as Captain of the Crash Boat Rescue Vessel #P428, rescuing downed fliers from Borneo to Manila. He was in Manila when the war ended and stayed there after he was granted a discharge developing a successful fishing business which he later sold to the Philippine Government and returned to Seattle in 1946. That same year, he bought a fish trap at Granite Point in Prince William Sound and in 1948 purchased a small cannery at Kenai, Alaska which was the beginning of 40 years in the canning business, adding plants in Cordova, Kodiak and South Naknek, Alaska. He enlarged the plant at Kenai with the most modern concrete and steel facility in Alaska at the time, and pioneered many improvements in the canning process such as introducing "Seawater Refrigeration" and was the first in the world to build aluminum fishing boats and built over 200. In 1979 he sold Kenai Packers, North Pacific Seafoods and North Pacific Transportation Companies and three years later at age 72 retired to enjoy time at his Maui vacation home. He would often be heard to say "I loved being in business!" He loved his family, sailing, golf and classical music. He was a life member of the Seattle Yacht Club, former member of Seattle Golf Club and a founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Seattle. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rita Brandmeir Daubenspeck; daughter, Elizabeth Ann Marks and husband, Richard; grandson, Byron Marks and his wife, Keri, of Seattle; as well as sisters, Wilma Cliff of San Rafael, California and Ruth Connelly of Belvedere, California; plus numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister, Eloise Farrell, and brothers, J. Byron Daubenspeck and Bernarr Daubenspeck. HE FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT! HE FINISHED THE RACE! HE KEPT THE FAITH! Recitation of the Rosary will be Tuesday, May 27th, at 7:00 p.m., and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, May 28th, at 9:00 a.m., BOTH at Our Lady of Fatima Church followed by a reception in the social hall to celebrate Harold's life.
