Sutherland, 86, of Oskaloosa, died Monday, June 5, 2006, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born March 6, 1920 at Harvey, Iowa, the son of William O. and Ida C. Swangle Sutherland. Harold graduated from the Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1940; attended Creston Junior College; Kletzing College (now Vennard); and business school in Minneapolis. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the building of Lake Keomah. On May 30, 1942, Harold was united in marriage to Gladys Rexroth at Oskaloosa. Early in his adult life, he pastored at three churches. Later, he was a bookkeeper at Carmichael & Son in Oskaloosa and the Harold Freeman Chrysler dealership. In 1958, he began working at Mahaska State Bank as a teller, and later as an assistant cashier before retiring in 1982. In retirement, Harold worked part time at the bank as an assistant to the bank auditor for two years. He had served as treasurer for the Mahaska County Red Cross, the Oskaloosa School District, and Oskaloosa Little League. He was a long time member of the Oskaloosa First Church of the Nazarene. His family includes his wife, Gladys of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Marilyn Kaye and Tom Sullivan of Olathe, Kansas; two sons and their wives: Dr. Don and Chris Sutherland of Evans, Georgia and Dr. Richard and Marcine Sutherland of Bellbrook, Ohio; 5 grandchildren: Shawn Sutherland, Erin Voshell, Kari Taylor, Sarah Sullivan, and Kendra Sutherland; and three great grandsons: Tyler Sutherland, Garrett Voshell, and Braden Taylor. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers: George, Earl, Raymond, Orrie, and William Sutherland; and 2 sisters: Dorothy and Louise. Funeral services for Harold Sutherland will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Reverend Dave Childers officiating. Burial will be in the University Park Cemetery at University Park, with graveside military honors given by members of Oskaloosa veteran's organizations. Visitation will begin at the funeral chapel on Wednesday after 10 a.m., and the family will be present 6:30 ? 8 p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
