The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Friday. Harold Clarence Ladenthin was born on April 8, 1920, in Mission, Texas, the son of Jacob and Louise (Krause) Ladenthin. He was raised on a farm near Le Mars, Iowa, where he attended country school. Harold graduated from Union High School, rural Remsen, Iowa, in 1938. He furthered his education at the University of Iowa, earning a degree in pharmacy in 1942. On April 13, 1943, Harold and Anna Mae Muecke were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa. In 1943 Harold enlisted in the United States Navy. He served aboard a destroyer as a pharmacist mate, taking on the duties of the ship's doctor. He earned an honorable discharge in 1945. After the service Harold and Anna Mae made their home in Sioux City, Iowa, where Harold worked at Toller Drug and St. Luke's Hospital. In 1953 the family moved to Marcus, Iowa, and purchased the pharmacy. For the next 33 years Harold operated the pharmacy with this as his motivation: "The medicines we dispense are only the tools God uses to heal." He retired from full-time work in 1986 but continued to substitute for the next 10 years. Harold was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Laymen's League. He also served on the Marcus School Board. He enjoyed time spent with his family and playing cards. Harold was an avid golfer and even hosted a golf tournament for his 90th birthday. Grateful to have shared his life is his wife of 71 years, Anna Mae of Marcus; son, Philip and wife Alayda Ladenthin of Marcus; daughter, Gloria and husband Mike Schmillen of Spencer, IA; son, John and wife Mary Ladenthin of Minnetonka, MN; nine grandchildren, Krista (Bryan) Dirks of Marcus, Angela (Scott) Mingus of Spencer, IA, Jason (Stephanie) Ladenthin of Liberty, MO, Tricia (Thomas) Greinert of Lenexa, KS, Scot (Colleen) Ladenthin of Cherokee, IA, Amanda Schmillen of Keihi, HI, Nicole Ladenthin of Minnetonka, Josh Ladenthin of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Jacob Ladenthin of Minnetonka; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant great-granddaughter, Gemma Ladenthin; four brothers, Bill, Wally, Larry, and Herb Ladenthin; sisters, Ella (Mrs. John) Gotto and Edna Ladenthin; and special golfing friend, Dave Peters.
