Read More	Son of Leo Clyde & Helen Mae Mease Hayward Veteran of Korean War Harold "Dean" Hayward died early Sunday morning, November 6, 2011 at the Southern Hills Specialty Care facility in Osceola, Iowa at the age of 80 of congestive heart failure. Dean was born October 29, 1931 in Independence, Iowa to Leo Clyde Hayward and Helen Mae (Mease) Hayward. He was the youngest of three siblings, along with his older brothers Paul and Marvin. Dean graduated from Independence High School in 1949. He attended the University of Iowa, earning a Bachelor of Science in Commerce in 1953. During the Summers of 1951 and 1952, he worked as a temporary utility worker for the Iowa Public Service Company in Independence, performing gas line construction, meter installations, leak surveys, and service work. Dean entered the United States Army on July 10, 1953, one month after his college graduation. He completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky before receiving additional training in finance at Fort Ben Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana. After spending three months at Fort G. G. Meade, Maryland as a finance clerk, he was deployed to Pusan, Korea as a finance clerk with the 32nd Quartermaster Group. He later became the section chief of the finance section in his office. He was discharged as a corporal on May 28, 1955. Upon Dean's return home, he spent the Summer of 1955 with the Iowa Public Service Company before returning to the University of Iowa in the Fall where he completed 24 credit hours of graduate work in General Business between 1955 and 1956. He returned to work for the utility company between June 1956 and February 1958. Between February 1958 and June 1960 he returned to the University of Iowa and completed 58 credit hours in Industrial Engineering while continuing to work for the utility company during the summers. In 1959 Dean met Aletha "Lee" Mae Stumpf, then a student from Rockwell City, Iowa attending the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. They married on February 24, 1962, shortly after Dean had moved to Osceola. Dean and Aletha lived for three years in an upstairs apartment in a lovely old home still located at 229 West Cass Street before buying their present home in 1965. Between 1962 and April 1969 Dean worked in a small Osceola accounting firm, first as an employee and later as a partner. In May 1969 he went to work for Dial Financial Corporation in Des Moines. Two years later he went into business for himself, working from his home and eventually building an office on Highway 69 North in Osceola where he worked until his retirement. Although running a small business could be challenging and time consuming, Dean always said that he counted himself fortunate to "be his own boss." Throughout the years, he developed many valued professional and personal relationships with clients throughout both southern Iowa and other parts of the state. Dean loved fishing --- particularly in Canada with his friends and in-laws. He was a lifelong fan of the University of Iowa football and basketball teams. He also enjoyed golf, reading, playing bridge, and spending time with his family. He was an active member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Osceola, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the Osceola Country Club for many years, and a member of the Eagles Lodge. Dean was a loyal supporter of Clarke High School athletics throughout the 1980s as he cheered on both his friends' children and his own. Dean's health began failing several years ago as diabetes began to take its toll. Throughout that difficult time he was thankful for the support of his many friends and family, as well as his home health care providers. He also appreciated the care he received at the Southern Hills Specialty Care facility during the final two weeks of his life. Dean is survived by his wife, Lee, his son Dan Hayward and his wife Julie (Reno, Nevada), his daughter Judi Hensley and her husband Eddie (North Carolina), his grandchildren Joshua Casterline, Elsa Ross-Hayward and William Hayward, his brother Marvin Hayward and his wife Colette (Urbandale, Iowa), and several nieces and nephews including Marvin's son Jim and his wife Mary (Urbandale, Iowa) who along with Marvin and Colette provided him with support during his final years. He is also survived by his sisters in law, Florence Newberry; Doris Dickerson; Faye (Norman) Mundie (Ft. Dodge, Iowa) and Rosella Loxterkamp (Sac City, Iowa) as well as brother in law, Dale (Joan) Stumpf (Rockwell City, Iowa). Dean was preceded by his parents; oldest brother, Paul; brothers in law, Bernard Stumpf; John Newberry; Marvin Loxterkamp; Bob Bodwell and Norman Dickerson. Visitation: on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 Visitation will be open for the public after 12 noon Wednesday at Kale Funeral Home Service: 10:00 am on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at St. Bernard Catholic Church 222 E. Pearl St. Osceola Iowa 50213 (map/driving directions) Cemetery: A graveside service will be held later Thursday afternoon at St. Francis Catholic Cemetery in Rockwell City, Iowa, where Dean will be buried near his wife Lee's childhood home.
