Services will be held on July 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn Iowa. Read More	Harold Dean Smith, 91, passed away at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, Iowa on June 27, 2020. Services will be held on July 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn Iowa. Harold was born in Minburn, Iowa at home on his parents’ family farm to Porter and Ethel (Little) Smith on May 15, 1929. He attended Sugar Grove School No. 4 and graduated from Minburn High School. Harold married (Lillian) Darlene Rector June 30, 1948. They were married 58 years until Darlene preceded him in death September 13, 2006. Harold operated the Smith Produce store in Minburn prior to joining the Marines in 1951. While in the Marines he was trained as a Diesel Mechanic. Harold returned to Minburn after serving in the Marines and then moved to Des Moines where he worked as a mechanic for several years prior to purchasing a farm southeast of Minburn. He farmed about 1,200 acres as well as raising livestock for about 20 years, until farm chemicals caused health issues making a career change necessary. During his time on the farm he was active in the Minburn community serving on town boards and the school board. He also operated a garage/welding shop and a laundromat in Minburn while farming. When he and his family lived in Minburn his free time was spent with his friends having a cup of coffee at Nellie’s Café, dancing, bowling, hunting, fishing in Canada or camping and boating at Iowa lakes. After leaving the farm in Minburn Harold moved his family to a house on Lake Panorama and opened the Koffee Kup restaurant and later included a bar in Dallas Center. He also built and operated the Sugar Grove Conoco gas station and garage on the corner next to the Koffee Kup. Leaving his home in Panora he moved to Dallas Center for a short time before moving to Arizona the first time. Harold lived in Omaha, Nebraska for a while working for the Big Bear Equipment Company and in Hastings, Nebraska working for the Hastings Equity Grain Bin Mfg. Co. He and Darlene moved back to Minburn in town near the skating rink and operated Smittys Mini-Market and Smith Home Improvement contracting company in Iowa until moving back to Arizona where he continued working as a builder/contractor. Harold and Darlene lived in several homes in Arizona in Mesa, Gilbert and finally in Queen Valley. In Arizona he again enjoyed dancing, bowling and had great fun driving his jeep into the desert, four-wheeling off road and exploring with friends. Those excursions were usually followed with an invitation to his home where he would cook a breakfast or dinner for the large crowd of people that had traveled into the desert. Harold enjoyed several years of companionship with Bonnie Luellen, a longtime friend of both Harold and Darlene. Winter and spring months were spent in the warmth of Arizona located closer to Harold’s son, Greg and his family, and daughter, Pam, and her family. Summer and fall months were spent in Iowa where Harold was closer to Nebraska where his daughter, Vickie, and her family lives while Bonnie was near her children and many generations of family members. Harold’s children would like to express their gratitude to members of the Luellen family for their caring and assistance provided to Harold as his health declined.
