"Hal" Adams Jr., 67, of Brier Court, founder of the Warwick Boys club, a Jaycees award-winner and an attorney for 40 years, retiring last year, died Saturday at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. He was the husband of Patricia (King) Adams. Born in Providence, a son of Paulina A. (Greene) Adams of Warwick and the late Harold E. Adams Sr., he lived in Warwick since 1960. Mr. Adams had been a partner in Higgins, Cavanagh & Cooney, in Providence, from 1958 to 1986, and then with Adams & Haydon, East Greenwich, until he retired. He was a founder of the Warwick Boys Club and its first president, from 1965 to 1969, and had served on its board of directors from 1965 to 1979. He was a past president of the Warwick Community Mental Health Clinic and former vice president of the Kent County Comprehensive Mental Health Clinic Inc. He was a member of the board of directors for Rhode Island Legal Services Inc. Mr. Adams was appointed by Gov. John Chafee to the Rhode Island Commission of Youth, serving from 1963 to 1966, and to the board of directors of the Dr. John E. Donley Rehabilitation Center, serving from 1965 to 1969. He received the Rhode Island Jaycees Outstanding Young Man of the Year Award in 1966, the Warwick Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1967, the Warwick Boys Club Award in 1969, the University of Rhode Island Alumni Association Ram award in 1971, the Army Commendation Medal in 1973, the Warwick Boys Club Man and Boy Award in 1976, the Boys Club of America Bronze Keystone Award in 1980 and the URI Hall of Fame Award in 1981. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served as a lieutenant and platoon leader with the 1st Armored Division, and later with the Army of Occupation in Germany. He served in the Army Reserves for 22 years, retiring in 1972 as a major. He had served as acting commanding officer of the 443rd Civil Affairs Company. Mr. Adams was a 1958 graduate of Harvard Law School and a 1953 graduate of URI. He was a past president and former trustee of the URI Foundation and a past president of the URI Alumni Association. He was a member of Warwick Central Baptist Church and a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Providence, where he served as deacon, legal counsel, president of the Calvary Mens Club and chairman of the Board of Christian Social Progress and was a member of the steering committee for the church cabinet. He was a member of the board of managers of the Rhode Island Baptist State Convention from 1968 to 1973 and a member of the State Council of Churches. He had previously served as moderator of the Warren Baptist Association. Mr. Adams was a member of the board of directors of the International Institute of Providence Inc. and the Society for the Prevention of Blindness. He was a former trustee of the Warwick Public Library and the East Greenwich Yacht Club. He was a member of the board of directors for World Affairs Council of Rhode Island. He was a past president of the Boxer Club and a member of the American Boxer Club and the Providence County Kennel Club. He served on the board of incorporators for Kent County Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Turks Head Club, Providence, the Boys Club, the Varnum Continentals, the Navy League of Rhode Island, Save the Bay Inc., the Harvard Club of Rhode Island, the Mystic Seaport Marine Historical Association, the Rhode Island Historical Society, the South County Rod and Gun Club, and the American and Rhode Island Philatelic Societies. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, a daughter and six grandchildren.
