Harold Emil Krueger was born June 15, 1928, on a farm in Redwood County in Wabasso, MN to Walter Hubert Emil Krueger and Anna Emma Emilie (Radunz) Krueger. Harold’s dad was in the field cultivating corn so his mother delivered him on her own and because he was so small, his first bed was a shoebox. Harold was baptized July 28, 1928 in the Willow Lake Lutheran Church and confirmed at St. Johns Evangelical Church in Redwood Falls, MN in 1942. Walter and Anna would have eleven children with Harold being the oldest. The others joining him were Donald, Gladys, Darlene, Virginia, Curtis, Walter, Allan, Myron, Duane, and Richard. Harry and his family lived on the farm in Wabasso until he was about five years old. They then moved to Redwood Falls, MN. It was during this time that Harold broke his arm riding on the back of a tricycle. The accident left his arm permanently bent at a ninety degree angle. Little did he know this incident would have a direct bearing on his life’s career. During his youth, Harry worked many jobs including setting pins at the bowling alley, delivering papers, working for his aunts and uncles on their farms during the summer months, at an asbestos plant, playing dance jobs, at the lumber yard and for the city street department. Knowing that he would never be able to play sports because of his arm, Harry’s mother bought him a trumpet. She purchased a Gladiator trumpet from the local music store by paying $1.00 a week for forty weeks. Harry’s band teacher in Redwood Falls, Stanley Limburg, was an important influence in starting his musical career. He graduated from Redwood High School in 1946. In the fall of 1946, Harry started college at Mankato State. So many GI’s were coming back from the war and going to school that the only place left for him to live at the college was the infirmary. Having run out of money after one quarter, Harry left Mankato State and returned home. Shortly after that and hearing the Luther College Band play in Redwood Falls, Harry was determined to attend there. He now had to work seriously to save his money. It was back to the lumber yard where he worked 60 hours a week for twenty cents an hour for the first forty hours and then time and a half for the final twenty hours, In addition to the lumber yard, Harry played twelve to fifteen nights a month in various dance bands making about $6.00 a job in those early years. Harry began Luther College in Decorah, IA in the fall of 1947, continuing to play dance jobs and doing odd jobs to pay the $150.00 per semester costs. It was during his junior year at Luther that Harry would meet Phyllis Breen, a freshman from Hurley, SD and it was also the year his mother would have her eleventh child. Harry’s band director, Weston Noble, was another important influence in his musical career. Harry received his BA from Luther College in 1950. His education continued at the University of Northern Colorado where he received his MA degree in 1955 and his ED.D degree in 1964. Harry’s love of education was evident as he also studied at Weston State College in Gunnison, CO, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY, the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT, Aspen Music School, Aspen, CO, and Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant, MI. Harry and Phyllis were married in Hurley, SD on August 20, 1950. Following their honeymoon, Harry began his first teaching job in Calmar, IA for $300.00 a month. Following Calmar (1950-1953), other teaching positions were in Britt, IA (1953-1954), Glenco, MN (1954-1956), and St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, MN (1956-1965). Harry joined the Augustana College Music Department staff in 1965. Now known as “Doc”, he directed the brass activities of the music department. This included the Northlanders Jazz Band and the Augustana Brass Choir. In addition to these groups, he was responsible for applied brasswinds, brass pedagogy and literature, and the music for Viking Varieties. Doc was also chair of the music department for the final three years of his career at Augustana College. Not only did Doc teach at Augustana, he and Phyllis lived directly across from the campus where they raised their four sons; David, Mark, Timothy, and Thomas. Harry retired from formal teaching in 1993, but maintained an active brass studio, continued with adjudication, trumpet performance and seminar assignments throughout the area. He also organized the Sioux Empire Brass Society which he conducted for ten years. Doc was a performing member of many organizations including the South Dakota Symphony and the Sioux Falls Municipal Band. He also was in demand as a guest conductor, soloist, adjudicator and clinician in the upper Mid-West and taught in summer music camps for many years. Doc published many articles for music magazines, arranged several brass choir pieces, and served in various capacities of music educators associations. He received many awards including being inducted into the SD Band Masters Hall of Fame, and many honors for his contributions to the music world. Doc was well respected by all. Travel was very important in both Doc’s professional life at Augie as well as with Phyl in retirement. Five times he took his Brass Choir to tour and perform in Europe and twice he took his sabbatical overseas. In 1972 Harry and his family lived in Germany for eight months while he studied Baroque trumpet with Ed Tarr in Basel, Switzerland. In 1990 he and Phyl traveled to Australia and New Zealand. Also in their retirement years, Doc and Phyl enjoyed numerous cruises, highlighted by a 50th anniversary cruise to Alaska with their entire family. Harry was an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church serving on various boards, Stephen Ministries, choir, and performing and organizing brass groups whenever called on. Doc was preceded in death by his father Walter (1989), mother Anna (1995), sister Gladys (Jack) Mahlum (2003), brother in Law Jack Mahlum (2013), brother Donald (2016) and sister in law Bonnie (Donald) (2016). Grateful for sharing his life is his wife Phyllis and children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Doc was a friend and mentor to many and loved to correspond with those who had been a part of his and his family’s life. He would conclude this writing by saying, “Hang in there, my friend”. Harry’s memorial service will be held at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 909 West 33rd St, Sioux Falls, SD on Thursday, July 5th, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery Hurley, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to the H. Krueger Brass Music Scholarship Fund at Augustana University (2001 S.
