Description	:	Harold Emmert Hansen was born on the family farm, Monroe Township, Shelby County, Iowa on September 9, 1918 to Henry and Emma (Scheef) Hansen. He was baptized in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Walnut, Iowa. His mother Emma passed away with flu complications when he was 4 months old. Read More	Harold Emmert Hansen was born on the family farm, Monroe Township, Shelby County, Iowa on September 9, 1918 to Henry and Emma (Scheef) Hansen. He was baptized in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Walnut, Iowa. His mother Emma passed away with flu complications when he was 4 months old. Harold went to live and be raised by his mother's sister, Hugo & Nora (Scheef) Carbuhn. Harold went to Country School Porterville #9, Lincoln Township, through the 8th grade and then went on to graduate from Walnut High School with the Class of 1936 in Walnut, Iowa. On January 22, 1942 he was united in marriage to Mary Martin at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut. Harold was drafted into the US Army and left on his birthday in 1942, three months before his first daughter was born. In addition to Judith, two sons Jerry and Ronald and daughter Rosemary joined the family after he came home from service. Harold's military service included basics in North Carolina & California. Then on to the Pacific combat area of Attu, Kiska in the Aleutian Islands, Kwajalein, Atoll, Leyte, the Philippines and Okinawa. After being wounded in action in Okinawa, Harold was honorably discharged on October 16, 1945 and returned home safe and with many medals of honor and ribbons including the purple heart. Harold was in communications so that meant being one of the first off the boat to scout out the area, dig a fox hole and radio back to the troops the situation. After returning home, Harold and family farmed south of Walnut, Lincoln Township, Hancock area and north of Walnut in Monroe, Shelby County. In 1959, the family bought an acreage on the edge of Walnut and Harold took up carpenter work and also worked for Mary's brother, Carl. Harold enjoyed being a "finish carpenter" and did excellent work. Built several grandfather clocks, lamps and other items with his lathe. He remodeled many kitchens and bathrooms over the years. He was always the man that the antique dealers turned to when they needed parts or an item to be repaired or restored. He always got them looking like the original! Harold also worked as a substitute mail carrier for twenty years and was active in church and AMVETS. In addition to his woodworking hobby, he liked to travel. Harold is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Mary of Walnut; his children: Judith (Delbert) Brehmer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jerry Hansen of Walnut; Ronald (Nancy) Hansen of Walnut and Rosemary (Bill) Steinkamp of Bellingham, Washington; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; half brothers Merle (Ardell) Hansen of Brayton; Donald (Luella) Hansen of Walnut; sister in law, Hazel Hansen of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, April 18, 2009 with Father John Frost celebrating the 10:30 a.m. service at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Walnut, Iowa. Casket bearers were the seven grandchildren: Brad Petersen, Bill Steinkamp, Chad Hansen, Sunita Boyer, Shalee Hansen, Jay Brehmer and Jeff Brehmer. Military Rites were held at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Walnut, Iowa. (Pauley Jones Funeral Home, Avoca, was in charge of arrangements.
