Thanel, of Norfolk, Nebraska, died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Stanton Health Care Center, Stanton, Nebraska. Harold was born October 7, 1920, in Norfolk, to Ferdinand "Fred" Frank and Anna Marie (Braun) Thanel. Harold graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1938, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On May 5, 1946, he married Ethel Esther Louisa Herbolsheimer of Pierce, Nebraska. Harold was a partner in ownership, then later, the owner of Economy Food Market, a grocery store that served the Norfolk area for many years. After selling the business, he became the office manager for Colonial Research Chemical Corporation in Norfolk, working there until his retirement. Over the years, Harold was active in community and service organizations, including Norfolk Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Izaak Walton League. A lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry and sang in the choir. Harold was an avid outdoorsman, passing along his love of fishing and hunting to his sons. In later years, Harold took up the hobby of sailing, building his first boat, then helping friends build their sailboat. Harold and Ethel had many happy summers, camping and sailing at Lewis and Clark Lake, with friends and family. Throughout his life, he enjoyed listening to classical music. Harold is survived by: sons and daughters and their spouses, Fredric H. and Diane M. (Carraher) Thanel of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Christopher J. Thanel and Debra Ferguson of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Joan M. and Michael B. Evans of Jackson, Missouri, and Elizabeth A. Thanel and Robert J. Jarrett of Garland, Nebraska; grandchildren, Harold Thanel, Paul Thanel, Emily Thanel, Katherine Thanel, Sara (Thanel) Dukart, Tiffany Thanel, Rebecca Thanel, Amos Evans, Maria Evans, Jerry Evans, Charles Evans, Emma Evans, Jennifer (Jarrett) Becker, and Phillip Jarrett and five great-grandchildren. Harold was preceded in death by: parents and wife, Ethel Esther Louisa (Herbolsheimer) Thanel. Inurnment was in the Trinity Episcopal Church Columbarium, Norfolk, Nebraska. Military Honors were conducted by VFW Post 1644 and American Legion Post 16, both of Norfolk, Nebraska and the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.
