Description	:	Harold Fredrick Spiry, the third generation of the Spiry family to live in Java, made a career of teaching, a career that spanned some 50 years. Read More	Harold Fredrick Spiry, the third generation of the Spiry family to live in Java, made a career of teaching, a career that spanned some 50 years. Not only in his home town of Java, he also taught in Roscoe, Streeter, N.D., Lennox, Milbank, Aberdeen, and 20 years in Mobridge. Serious in his work, he prided himself on being the best he could - to the students and to the community. He was so gratified when the students of both Java and Mobridge dedicated their yearbooks to him. In addition to being a member of school organizations, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, Rotary, Toastmasters Club and other groups in Mobridge. He was a lifetime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java where he directed the choir for 20 years. He earned awards in the field of vocal and speech work, where he was awarded many Division I ratings, including several superiors in state competition. An avid writer, Harold had numerous articles published in national business magazines. "He was always ready to help us when we didn't understand something," a former student said. Upon retirement, Harold returned to Java where he resided until moving to the Beverly Healthcare center in Mobridge. In 2005, he moved to the Good Samaritan Center in Selby, where he died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at the age of 92. Harold was born in Java on June 7, 1915, the son of C.F. (Fred) and Rosina (Zeller) Spiry. He attended the Java Public School, graduating with the JHS Class of 1933. He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, and Phi Beta Kappa in 1940. He then did graduate work at Northern State College in Aberdeen, the University of Minnesota, and Columbia University in New York City. He served as superintendent of the Java Public School for nine years and an additional five years as a classroom teacher. He also served as a classroom teacher in the other towns where he had been. He served as president of the South Dakota Business Teachers Association and was a member of the South Dakota Education Association and the National Education Association. His parents preceded Harold in death. The funeral for Harold was Friday, Jan. 4, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Java. Ushers were Carlyle Bieber and Earl Frank. Casketbearers were Steve Biel, Dan Biel, Oscar Fiedler J., and Cliff Bieber, all of Java, Harold Schreter of Selby and Erwin Zeller of Aberdeen. Honorary bearers were Harold's first cousins, former students, fellow teachers, Mobridge Easter Star and Masonic members, and the Java Senior Citizens.
