Iron, a retired Salina police sergeant, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Dr. Bernard Hawley officiating. Burial will be in the Bennington Cemetery, Bennington. Mr. Crow died Friday at Windsor Estates nursing home. When "Pop" Crow retired 9 years ago, he easily was the most familiar member of the Salina police department. His "beat" was downtown Salina and he was there nearly 22 years. Most of his "arrests" were chats with children who delighted him and for whom he maintained a stock of candy and balloons. He always celebrated his own birthday by distributing sweets and balloons to the youngsters he found on his "beat". When a civic club began the tradition of naming a Policeman of the Year in 1956, there was only one choice. It was "Pop" Crow. Mr. Crow was born at Bennington and farmed in the Verdi area until about 1938 when he became the one-man police force at Minneapolis. A few years later he came to Salina and eventually joined the Salina force. He was 76 and still walking his "beat" when he retired. Mr. Crow was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Elks Lodge, Modern Woodman of America and Kansas and National Peace Officers Association. Surviving are 4 daughters, Mrs. Virginia Fink, Monroe, Va.; Mrs. Mary Farrell, 604 E. Ash; Mrs. Opal Cooley, Wichita, and Mrs. Nadine Bell, Greensburg; a son, Robert, Glendale, Calif.; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Friends may call at the Chapel Funeral Home.
