Services were held on Friday August 8, at the United Methodist Church in Anthon, with the Rev. Karl Harman officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery at Anthon. Harold Herman Buettner was born on November 3, 1915, to John and Marie (Zastrow) Buettner, on the family farm near Ponca, Neb. His mother Marie died when he was six years old and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Dora Buettner. He attended school in rural Ponca and took a manual training course specializing in blacksmithing and forage welding, where he learned how to make tools, along with carpentry and working with lumber. He moved with his family to a farm east of Anthon in the spring of 1939. On December 8, 1939 Harold married Lucille Russell of Ponca, Nebraska at the Methodist church in Ponca. To this union, two daughters were born, Deanna and Karen. The couple farmed near Anthon for 40 years and retired into Anthon in 1979. Harold was a member of the United Methodist Church at Anthon. He was active in the church and held different offices. In the 1960's besides farming, he was a dealer for Archer Oil and was also an airplane observer for the U. S. Air Force. Harold enjoyed his family and working in his shop. He also enjoyed dancing, being with his friends at the cafe for coffee hour and golfing. He and Lucille traveled extensively during their retirement and enjoyed trips to California, Oregon and Nebraska visiting family and friends. After failing health in 1997, he enjoyed being home and sharing time with his family. He entered the Correctionville Nursing and Rehab Center in August of 2002. Survivors include his wife Lucille; two daughters and their husbands, Deanna and Dick Braun of Salix, Iowa, and Karen and Jim Peters of Correctionville; five grandchildren, Dick Braun Jr. and his wife, Donna, Kevin Braun and his wife, Debbie, and Julie and her husband, Tracy Nelson, all of Salix, Scott Peters and his wife Beth of Treynor, Iowa, and Kristi Kratch and her husband Steve of Rossie, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, Jenna and Aaron Braun, Tyler and Lenae Nelson and Dylan, Ethan and Megan Peters; and three sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, many many good friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marie Buettner; his stepmother, Dora (Wendel)Buettner; a brother, Lawrence Buettner; and his maternal grandmother, Wilma Molt who during her later years lived with her grandsons and their families; Harold and Lucille and Lawrence and Maizel Buettner.
