The on-line Gravestone Records for Wapello County, Iowa, and the WPA records show Harold's date of death as March 18, 1935. However, Shaul Cemetery's records show that Harold died February 18, 1935, and he was buried February 20. It appears there are a number of discrepancies in Harold’s information. The on-line Gravestone Records for Wapello County, Iowa, and the WPA records show Harold's date of death as March 18, 1935. However, Shaul Cemetery's records show that Harold died February 18, 1935, and he was buried February 20. His obituary, which I have transcribed below, was published in the "Ottumwa Courier," on Tuesday, February 19, 1935. Harold's middle initial in the obituary is “P.” However, in all of the on-line records, his middle initial is shown as “J,” and Shaul Cemetery’s records and his gravestone also show his middle initial was “J.” His obituary also states that he was 34 years old when he died. However, Harold is shown in the 1900 Census for Eliot, Louisa County, Iowa, living with his parents, at the age of 4, with a birth date of May 1896. Harold James Bowers married Irene Helen Sheets on February 18, 1916, in Burlington, Iowa. His parents are shown on the marriage record as John and Nancy (Sallady) Bowers. In the 1920 Census for Oakville, Louisa County, Iowa, Harold J. Bowers, age 23, was widowed and living with his mother Nancy Bowers, also widowed. On October 19, 1925, Harold was married to Violet Smith in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. His parents are also named on this marriage record as John and Nancy (Sallady) Bowers. On October 6, 1928, Harold married Bertha Irene Ross, in Fairfield, Iowa. In viewing the copy of the marriage record, Harold stated that this was his second marriage, and his parents are once again shown as John and Nancy (Sallady) Bowers. In the 1930 Census for Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa, Harold, Bertha, and their son Donald, age 10 months, were living with Bertha’s parents, Robert and Viola Ross. Harold’s age is shown as 29 in that census record, born in 1901. Harold is buried in the same lot as his wife Bertha and her second husband, James H. Weltch. I have transcribed the obituary as written. If anyone has information about Harold that should be included in this memorial, please let me know. -------------------------------------------- Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” February 19, 1935: Harold P. Bowers, 34 years old, died at 4 p.m. Monday at his home, 114 South Ransom street. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two children, Donald and Doris, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Jones of Oskaloosa and Mrs. William De Lap of Cedar Rapids, and a brother, Charles Bowers of Oskaloosa. Short funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home and at 2:30 p.m. in the Willard Street Methodist Episcopal church, conducted by the Rev. L.H. Lanning of Bloomfield, Mo., assisted by the Rev. Arthur P. Keest of the church. Burial will be in the Shaul cemetery.
