Description	:	Funeral services for lifelong Bottineau County resident and Scotia Township farmer, Harold Klokstad, 93, of Souris, were held on Monday, February 15, 2010 at 2:00 pm. Officiating at the service was the Reverend Barb Haugerud. The congregation sang selected hymns and Nancy Olson was the organist. Casket bearers were Matt Blada, Wally Brandjord, Lyle Gravseth, Wayne Miller, Dayton Skarphol and Dwight Tolstad. Honorary Casket bearers were Cordell Tolstad and Sherman Tolstad. Burial was at the church cemetery. Harold was born on June 13, 1916, in Grand Forks, North Dakota, the son of Olga Marie Langehaug Larson. At an early age, Bert O. and Marie Utgaardshagen Klokstad, Norwegian immigrants from Lesje, Norway, adopted Harold. Harold spent his entire life on the Klokstad homestead originating in 1899, Scotia Township. He learned to plant and harvest, care for cattle, horses, chickens, and pigs, and speak the native Norske language. Harold attended country school and was a member of Lesje Lutheran Church. Harold's interest in school was considerably diminished when his best friends, and the only other boys his age, left school to farm full time. Harold continued at school for a time and completed most of his eight grades of education. He was known for his love of reading, even at that age. He continued to be an avid reader throughout his life. Harold had a wonderful command of the English language but if he needed to really capture the essence of what he wanted to say he would use Norwegian. It was the language of his heart. Harold's sense of humor and enjoyment of life were expressed in his repertoire of stories which he enjoyed telling. Harold married Geraldine (Gerry) Delores Golliet, a student nurse at St. Andrew's School of Nursing June 3, 1943 at Lesje Lutheran Church. Gerry left her nursing studies and became a part of the "Lesje community" partnering with Harold in the farm operation and raising six children. They enjoyed fifty-seven years together. Gerry passed away January 29, 2001. Harold loved farming. He practiced diversification and continued that practice throughout his farming career. The long hours of demanding physical work were never considered a detriment to the joy of working the land and caring for livestock. He often recalled how tractors changed farming. His love of motorized vehicles was evident. Harold was presented the Turtle Mountain District Soil Conservation Award in the late 40's. Harold was an entrepreneur who would use the "common sense" approach to any endeavor. He recycled farm residue back into the soil and developed several extended farm-related venues which included custom harvesting, trucking of cattle and wheat and even stocking of cattle ponds with trout. Harold appreciated the natural world. He planted trees, protected wildlife and farmed to preserve the value of the land. Harold lived a truly purposeful life and will be missed by family and friends. Harold passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at a Westhope nursing home. Harold is survived by one son, Paul (Gloria) Klokstad, Westhope, ND and five daughters: Ann (Kenneth) Joraanstad, Bottineau, ND; Alice (Chuck) Damschen, Hampden, ND; Audrey (Paul) Bronsing, Phoenix, AZ; Jean (Verner) Esop, Baltimore, MD; Elaine (Roy) Jacobs Harper, KS; 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren; brother David (Muriel) Larson Green Valley, AZ; sister Marian (Wayne) Larson, St. Paul, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tom and Dorthea Reid, Fargo, ND; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
