He graduated from Blue Hill High School in 1942. From July 1944 to August 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the service, he came back to Nebraska and started farming and raising registered Herefords. He loved his land and cattle, taking excellent care of both. He also loved the challenge of moving buildings, so his legacy lives on in the numerous buildings that he moved around a large area of South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas. He married Myrtis J. Nissen on December 23, 1946, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a member of A.L. Shirley Post No. 176 of Blue Hill. He is survived by his wife, Myrtis of Blue Hill; one daughter, Susan and her husband Steve VanTassel of Midland, S.D.; one sister, Viola Heinrich of Ayr; one brother, Lester of Lincoln; and three grandchildren, Michelle, LaRae and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jolene; and one brother, Donald. ~ Hastings Tribune
