Harold L. Porath, the son of William and Edith (Larson) Porath, was born on January 12, 1918, at Belle Fourche, SD. In the mid 30’s, Harold moved to the Summit area. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. During his tour of duty, he was a Prisoner of War for 42 months. He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, World War II Victory Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, Philippine Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Purple Heart. On February 10, 1947, he married Arvilla Alig at Pocahontas. In 1948, the couple moved to the Summit area where he farmed. In 1955, they moved to Waubay where Mr. Porath operated the Mobil Gas Station. The couple moved to Watertown in 1961 where he operated the DX Gas Station and later the Kerr-McGee Station. Harold retired in 1978. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, and a member of the Ortley Post #2733 of the V.F.W. Contributed by Teresa #49560808
