Harold is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Helen, his son and daughter-in-law Wayne and Betsy Simon, his daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Dennis Hanson, his grandson Jerad Simon and friend Jennifer Arnold, his granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Heather and Chris Young, granddaughters Kerry Hoven and Brenda Simon, his step-granddaughter Wendy Hanson, step-grandsons Bryan Hanson and his wife DeLynn and Tate Hanson, great-grandchildren Camryn, Brandon and Ryan Young, step-grandsons Morgan and Chase Hanson, and two brothers and their wives Morris and Colleen Simon and Vic and Ann Simon and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Rosalia Schmidt, Rose Wagner, Pauline and Dick McKenna, Yvonne Brandner, Andy and Jan Deis, Bill Charron and many nieces and nephews. Harold spent most of his life in the Hoven area. He married Helen Hoffart of Onaka, S.D., on Jan. 13, 1942, at St. Anthony's Church in Long Beach, Calif. Helen was employed at Douglas Aircraft and Harold in the California shipyards at that time. Harold entered the Air Corps in October, 1942. After his basic training, Helen joined him in Delray Beach, Fla., where their first son Ardel was born. He was stationed at Boca Raton, Fla., for over two years. Later, they lived in Dallas, Texas, for several months, where Harold received his discharge in December, 1945. They returned to South Dakota where they farmed and raised cattle. They moved on the Weiszhaar farm in March 1946, which was then owned by John Simon. They purchased this farm and the adjoining Ben Kreuger farm, where they moved and raised their family which now included another son Wayne and a daughter Kathy. Harold, Wayne and Jerad had a partnership farming and ranching operation. Farming was both Harold's life work and his hobby. He was never happier than when he was checking cows and tagging calves, working the fields or driving around checking the crops. Harold loved to visit, especially about cattle and farming. The family liked to tease him about it because even when we were on vacation and left him alone for a few minutes, we'd come back and find him in a big discussion with another farmer/rancher. He also took great joy in hearing what his grandkids and great-grandkids were up to. He enjoyed showing everyone pictures of them. And he loved hearing stories about them and also liked to quiz his granddaughters about upkeep on their cars or if they had any boys in their life they wanted to tell him about. Harold was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, a 60-year member and past commander of the John J. Peters American Legion Post 159, served on the Co-op Board of Directors and as president of the board and also served many years on the township board. The wake service will be 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Hoven. His Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's with Rev. Lance Oser, celebrant.
