Spaetti, 88, of Evansville, Indiana loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away at Angel River Nursing Home Facility on March 30, 2011 where he was rehabilitating from major surgery. Harold was born December 22, 1922 to James and Gertrude Spaetti in rural Warrick County and grew up on family farm near Yankeetown. Spaetti, 88, of Evansville, Indiana loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend passed away at Angel River Nursing Home Facility on March 30, 2011 where he was rehabilitating from major surgery. Harold was born December 22, 1922 to James and Gertrude Spaetti in rural Warrick County and grew up on family farm near Yankeetown. Harold was a graduate of Lockyear Business College and the University of Evansville. He served as Chief Yeoman in the United States Coast Guard during WW II aboard the U.S.S. Randal. He was stationed in Washington DC during the war years, where met his wife and best friend, Mary Ellen Burkhardt, who also served in the Coast Guard. Mary Ellen preceded him in death in June of 2000. In 1960 Harold started the Evansville branch of Ulrich Chemical, Inc. and grew it to a major supplier of industrial chemicals for the Tri-State region. He retired from Ulrich in 1999 as Vice President & General Manager. During his time at Ulrich, he was very active in the American Waterworks Association (A.W.W.A) - Indiana Section and the Indiana Water Pollution Control Association (I.P.C.A). He was a past Chairman of A.W.W.A in 1976 and was a Director from 1991 to 1994 where he received the Tumble Bug Award and the Arthur Sidney Bedell Award in 1981 for outstanding service. He also was also a past president of the I.P.C.A. and received the George Warren Fuller Award in 1982 for outstanding service. Harold's life revolved around his church, his family, gardening, hunting, fishing, camping, international travel and the University of Evansville basketball program where he held season tickets for 60+ years. He was a charter member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church where he served as president of the PTA, the Men's Club and the Seniors Club. Harold received the Monsignor Maurilius Bilskie Award for exceptional service to Holy Rosary Catholic Church. In 2005, Harold was inducted into the Brute' Society for being recognized as an outstanding model of Christian Stewardship. During the summer, Harold could be found in his garden (which was a showpiece) planting, weeding and harvesting. He kept family, friends, and neighbors supplied with what can only be termed as the best produce in the area. On Sundays evenings, Harold gathered his kids, their spouses and the grandkids for grilling steaks or frying chicken creating lasting memories of a Dad & Grandpa who truly loved his family. Harold was an avid sports fan and his loyalties ran deep for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Indianapolis Colts. However, nothing compared to his passion for University of Evansville basketball. If Harold's loyalty alone could have won games, there would be approximately 65 National Championship banners hanging at Roberts Stadium. He was survived by his daughters, Karen Calvert (Randy) of Evansville, IN; Patricia Heerdink (Richard) of Bristow, IN; son James (Cindy) of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Chris Calvert (Kathy), Stacey Blackwell (Tracy), Matt Calvert (Seema), Neil Heerdink (Kim) and Sara Hurt (Todd), Tiffany Mitchell; great-grandchildren Jack, Joe & Will Calvert, Olivia, Chase & Claudia Blackwell, Riley & Colby Heerdink, Cassidy, Jacob & Megan Hurt; brother Virgil Spaetti; many nieces and nephews and a special friend Catherine Roberts. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 8:00 pm Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville, IN 47714 with a memorial service at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue from 9:30 - 10:30 am Monday, April 4, 2011 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1301 S. Green River Rd, Evansville, IN 47714. Funeral service will be at 10:30 am Monday at the church with Fr. Bernie Etienne officiating. Burial will be at St. Rupert's Cemetery, Warrick County, IN.
