Read More	Printed in the Benkelman, NE Post, October 1989 Harold Neal Stroup was born on April 25, 1925, at Benkelman, Nebraska, to Albert and Nellie (Huggans) Stroup, the third eldest of nine children. He died on October 2, 1989, at his home in Benkelman at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 7 days. He was married to Bertie Lawson on October 25, 1943, at St. Francis, Kansas. To this union were born three children. Harold was a farmer for most of his life until 1976 when the family moved to Benkelman and he went to work for Dundy County as a maintainer operator. Even then Harold kept his hand in farming by helping others on their farms as he had time. Harold was an extremely devoted family man taking great pride in his children and grandchildren, giving them as such joy as he received from them. He volunteered much of his time to help prepare and maintain the county fairgrounds for the fair and 4-H exhibitions and was honored for those efforts with a service award from the 4-H organization last spring. He also took great pride in the fact that he had served as a member of the Benkelman Volunteer Fire Department for 12 years. Harold was always willing to freely give of his time to help those who had need and whatever he did, he always did the best job he knew how. Even though Harold had led a full life and had many good memories and experiences, toward the end of his life he became aware of a need for something beyond himself. He found the fulfillment of that need when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior and was baptized into the faith. Services were held Thursday, October 5, 1989, at 10:30 a.m. at the Friends Church in Benkelman with the Rev. Vernon Whetstone and the Rev. Robert Rachuig officiating. Interment was in the Benkelman Cemetery with services conducted by Jones Funeral Home of Benkelman.
