Description	:	Harold Otis Halverson, 100, of Elgin, Iowa passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at his home in Elgin. Harold was born on June 27, 1916 on the home farm north of Postville, Iowa, the son of Albert O. and Anna Bertina (Anderson) Halverson. Read More	Harold Otis Halverson, 100, of Elgin, Iowa passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at his home in Elgin. Harold was born on June 27, 1916 on the home farm north of Postville, Iowa, the son of Albert O. and Anna Bertina (Anderson) Halverson. Harold was baptized July 1916 and confirmed on May 10, 1931 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church. He graduated from West Union High School in 1935. Harold served his country as a medic in the United States Army during WWII, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant. He spent nearly three years of overseas duty in New Guinea, the East Indies and the Philippine Islands. Harold participated in several assault landings and earned four bronze stars for various amphibious operations. He was credited with 325 days of combat and 112 days of continuous combat. Prior to WWII, Harold worked as a country school teacher in Fayette County when he met fellow school teacher and future wife, Gladys Joyce Peterson. On June 10, 1946 they were united in marriage at the Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. Harold and Gladys owned Halverson’s Grocery and Dry Goods in west Elgin for thirty years. Later Harold would work as a Head Start bus driver, a C.N.A. at the Fayette County Home, and as an assistant at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home for thirty years. Harold was a founding member of the Elgin Lutheran Church, a member of the Elgin Lions Club, and a seventy year member of the Elgin American Legion. Harold enjoyed sharing stories with family and friends, both old and new, over and over and over! He also enjoyed chauffeuring people to hospitals and other scheduled appointments. Harold’s favorite activities were family gatherings, mowing his lawn and talking. Harold was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother. His memory will be cherished by his son, Steve (Ruby) Halverson; daughter, Diane (Eric) Amundson; grandchildren, Scott, David and Peder Amundson, and James and Jacob Halverson; brother, Louis (Darlene) Halverson; sister, Lillian Hansel. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Halverson; parents, Albert and Anna Halverson; infant son, James O. Halverson; brother, DeVere (Norma) Halverson; three sisters, Alice Halverson, Francis (Bob) Bemiss and Irene (Alvin) Ruroden and two brothers-in-law, Mick Schroyer and Squire Hansel. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 28, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Friday. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, July 29, 2016 at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa with Rev. Lee Boleyn as the Officiant.
