Cooper, well known farmer of Crystal township, and veteran of the first world war, were held Sunday at 2:30 P.M. in the Garwin United Brethren church. Although it was a rainy afternoon, it was one of the largest funerals ever held in the church. Relatives and friends filled the main floor and balcony and many more were in the basement and heard the service through a loud speaker system. Mr. Cooper was a member of the Toledo American Legion and a body of his fellow members were in attendance. The Rev. L. E. Crippen, of Marshalltown, a former pastor of the church, was in charge of the service. He was assisted by the Rev. E. H. Shuey, pastor of the Peasant Hill Methodist church, who read the scripture and offered prayer. Mrs. A. D. Ward and Mrs. W. C. Frandsen sang, "Near to the Heart of God" and "Only Shadows". Mrs. Ralph Rider served as pianist. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Clarence Paustian, Mrs. H. L. Mason, Mrs. Carroll Westfall and Mrs. Frank Abbe. The casket bearers were Robert Lyon, H.L. Mason, Clarence Paustian, Harry Adair, Frank Abbe, and Carroll Westfall. Dies at Des Moines Mr. Cooper's death was a shock to the community. He died at 2 p.m. Thursday, and many had not yet learned that he had been taken to the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines Sunday afternoon for an appendectomy. Mrs. Cooper remained there with him and his condition was good until Thursday, when it became critical and the end came while other members of the family were on their way to the hospital. Pulmonary embolism was the cause of his death. The following obituary was read at the funeral services: Harold Russell Cooper, son of Hazen F. and Emma L. Cooper, was born May 22, 1894, at Montour, Iowa, and died at the Veterans' Hospital in Des Moines April 8, 1943. He spend his entire life in Tama and Marshall counties, with the exception of time spent in the service of his country. On December 31, 1919, he was married to Miss Vera Davis and they were the parents of two children, Lyle A. and Ralph G. Cooper. Mrs Cooper died January 10, 1923. On August 19, 1925, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Eliza J. Davis and to this union was born four children, Barbara, Earl, and Roger, and Harold Russel Jr., who preceded him in death March 1, 1929, at the age of 1 1/2 years. He was also preceded in death by his father and mother and two brothers, Alvin and Norville, who died in early childhood. Member of Legion In 1914 he joined the Pleasant Hill Methodist church of the Toledo circuit. He was a member of the Clarence LeRoy Reinig post of the American Legion at Toledo, and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post at Marshalltown. He is survived by his wife and five children, Lyle A. of Toledo, Pfc. Ralph G. in service with the U. S. Army at Keesler Field, Mississippi, Barbara, Earl, and Roger at home. His is also survived by one brother, Clifford F. Cooper, in service with the U.S. Army and stationed in Miami, Florida, together with many other relatives and friends. The son and brother were granted furloughs and were in attendance at the service. Military Rites Held Mr. Cooper enlisted in the service December 14, 1917 at Marshalltown and arrived in France September 13, 1918. Following the war he was honorably discharged from Mitchell Field, Long Island, June 21, 1919. He was a private in the 369th Baking company, "Quartermaster Corps. In France he was in the American Expeditionary Forces. Military rites at the funeral were in charge of the Toledo American Legion, under the direction of Commander Charles Roby, Chaplain C. E. Mericle, and M. L. Kvidera. Color bearers were O. L. Harrison and Carl Skedin; color guard, Marshall Hopper; and firing squad, Ed Kvidera, D. D. Toland, Glen H. Moorcroft, N. R. McAnulty, Earl Beery, Harry S. Lane, P.H. Overturf, R.H. Mericle, Simon Hofer, and F. J. Kremenak.
