Steffen, 65, of rural Cumberland, was held Friday, May 8, 1992 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) at Cumberland. Mr. Steffen passed away Tuesday, May 5, at Colonial Manor in Anita. Officiating at the service was the Rev. Sally Robinson. Music was provided by Norma Eilts, organist, and Bill Gerlock, vocalist. The son of George and Leta May Mountain Steffen, Harold Edward Steffen was born October 4, 1926 in Yuma, Colorado and at the age of 5 moved with his parents to his present home. He attended rural school in Bear Grove Township and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1944. He was married to Ruth Leone Gerlock on March 9, 1947 at her parents' home near Cumberland. They have farmed in Noble Township since. He was a member of First Church of Christ of Cumberland and served as a deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher and trustee of the church. He was leader of the Edna Hustlers 4-H Club for many years and had served on the Extension Council, Noble Township Insurance Board, and Farmer's Coop board. Their family was chosen farm family of the week and appeared on WOW-TV in December, 1966. Surviving are his wife; three sons, David Steffen and wife, Janice of Cumberland, Dale Steffen and wife, Pat of Des Moines, and Larry Steffen of Cumberland; a daughter, Kathy Hildebrand and husband, James of Atlantic; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Jessica, and Nathan Steffen of Cumberland, Leta, Bradley, and Matthew Steffen of Des Moines, and Michael Hildebrand of Atlantic; a sister, Dorothy Jarvis of Griswold; a brother-in-law, Robert Gerlock and wife, Joann of Cumberland; a step-sister, Letha Batten of Pleasantville; a step-brother, Wayne Pringey and wife, Bonnie of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; and his step-mother, Dollie Steffen.
