Description	:	Harold Thomas Cornell, 89, of Wenatchee, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2009. Harold was born in Wenatchee on October 20, 1919, to Perrin Cornell and Dorthy (Thomas) Cornell. Read More	Harold Thomas Cornell, 89, of Wenatchee, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2009. Harold was born in Wenatchee on October 20, 1919, to Perrin Cornell and Dorthy (Thomas) Cornell. One of five children, Harold grew up on Cascade Street and graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1938. Following graduation, he worked at the Columbia Hotel as a bell hop. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and obtained his aviator wings. Assigned to the 315 Bomb Wing near Kingman, AZ, Harold was a pilot and later an instructor pilot, until injured in an airplane (B-17) crash in the mid 1940's. In 1945, he was assigned to the Pacific Theater. Although he had amassed many flying hours as a Lieutenant, he found it difficult to obtain combat missions. He was often ordered to fly his B-29 to Australia to bring back Coca-Cola for the troops on Guam. He joked, that by his calculation, it cost the government about $9.00 per bottle to deliver the soda. Upon obtaining a combat mission, he was within 30 miles of his target, when Japan surrendered. Harold returned to Wenatchee following the War and entered the Reserve. He formed a business partnership with Bob May and later worked for Milot Mills. In 1952, prior to the Korean War, Harold returned to active duty and served in Korea. During the time following Korea, Harold was stationed in Misawa, Japan, London, England and Rhein Maine, Germany. Additionally, he was stationed state side at several locations. He obtained his Bachelor Degree from the University of California and his Masters Degree from Creighton University. Harold was preparing to retire in the early 1960's, but extended, in order to serve in Vietnam. He retired from active duty in January 1969, as a Lieutenant Colonel, after 26 years of service. Following retirement, he lived in Pendleton, SC and opened a restaurant. He also built and sold two houses of his own design. Harold developed his appreciation for cooking, that was whetted in his travels with the Air Force and a skill he carried with him and often used. He moved from South Carolina to Camano Island, WA and resided there for a number of years, finally moving back to Wenatchee in 1988. During this time, Harold cultivated a strong love for the outdoors and also for hiking and running. He continued his education everywhere he lived and, on several occasions, worked on archeological digs with the National Geographic Society. Harold was a member of Wenatchee Central Lions, the local chapter of the Military Officer's Association of America and he had over 50 years of membership in the Knights of Columbus. He was a very active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, taking part in most activities and helping out wherever needed. He developed many friends and close associations within the community of the church. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Eva Floyd. He is survived by his brothers, Charles and Richard (Dorothy) Cornell and his sister, Helen Watson, all of Wenatchee. He is also survived by eight nieces and nephews. Harold's family wishes to express their appreciation to the family of St. Joseph's Church for all the help and support they offered Harold over the years. Additionally, the support and help of two of Harold's very good friends, Lee Trotter and Gene Schatz, will be long remembered. Thanks also, to the Souve Adult Family Home, where Harold received excellent care in his last days. Visitation will be held at Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home on Sunday, August 23, 2009, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a Vigil. Mass of Christian Burial will occur at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wenatchee on Monday, August 24, at 10:00 a.m., followed by Interment in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Building Fund at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Jones & Jones~Betts Funeral Home is in care of arrangements.
